Free Indoor Playgrounds For Kids, From Sai Ying Pun To Tung Chung

Did you know the government runs free children’s playrooms all over Hong Kong? You’ll find them in Sai Ying Pun, Happy Valley, Sai Wan Ho, Aberdeen, Kowloon, Tseung Kwan O and Tung Chung. Run by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) inside public sports centres, these themed rooms get cleaned between sessions and give little ones somewhere to climb, crawl and burn off energy for free. They’re handy on rainy or steamy days, especially in neighbourhoods without many indoor play options. These are our favourite free indoor playrooms in Hong Kong.

A few notes on visiting:
- No booking needed. Entry is first-come, first-served. Playrooms don’t stay open all day. They run set sessions of about 45 minutes, with gaps of 15 minutes or more for cleaning, so check the session times on the LCSD page before you head out. Admission tickets are handed out 15 to 30 minutes before each session at most venues. Arrive early for popular slots: your ticket is void if you’re not there within 10 minutes of the start.
- Each playroom closes for maintenance on two set mornings or afternoons a month (it varies by venue). If a maintenance day falls on a public holiday, it moves to the next working day, so check the LCSD page or call ahead before you go.
- Government playrooms in Hong Kong are designed for kids aged 4 to 9 and no taller than 142cm. Kids under 4 must have a parent or guardian with them!

Are government playrooms in Hong Kong free?
Yes. Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) children’s playrooms inside public sports centres are free.
There is no entry fee and no SmartPLAY booking. You only need to queue for a session ticket.
What age can kids use an LCSD playroom?
They are designed for children aged 4 to 9 who are no taller than 142cm. Under-4s can go in only with a parent or guardian.
Older or taller children are usually turned away, so check height before you queue.
Do I need to book a free playroom in Hong Kong?
No. Entry is first-come, first-served. Most rooms run about 45-minute sessions, with tickets handed out 15 to 30 minutes before the start. Arrive early on weekends and rainy days.
If you are not there within 10 minutes of the start, the ticket is void.
What should I bring to a public playroom?
Socks are required. Shoes stay outside. Pack a water bottle and a spare pair of socks.
Rooms are cleaned between sessions, and each venue closes for maintenance on two set mornings or afternoons a month, so call ahead or check the LCSD page.
Where are the best free playrooms by area?
Hong Kong Island options include Shek Tong Tsui and Sun Yat Sen in Sai Ying Pun, Smithfield in Kennedy Town, Wong Nai Chung in Happy Valley, Island East in Sai Wan Ho, plus Stanley, Ap Lei Chau and Aberdeen. Kowloon has Ho Man Tin and the large Animal Kingdom room at Choi Wing Road in Kwun Tong. Tseung Kwan O has the Velodrome, Tiu Keng Leng and Hang Hau. Tung Chung has Man Tung Road.

- Shek Tong Tsui Sports Centre: Indoor Playroom In Sai Ying Pun
This playroom in Sai Ying Pun has a "sky" theme with a castle climbing frame and tube slide (pictured) and lots of padding for the little ones to play safely. It holds up to 30 kids in its 145 square-metre space, with 45-minute sessions between 7:50am and 9:35pm (except maintenance days, the 2nd and 4th Monday mornings of each month).

- Wong Nai Chung Sports Centre: Indoor Playrooms In Happy Valley
Happy Valley families get two playrooms in one building here: "Fun World of Chess" and "Great Animal Migration". They're on the cosier side (16 to 24 kids per session), with 45-minute sessions between 8am and 8pm, except the 1st and 3rd Wednesday mornings of each month. Afterwards, take a stroll around the racecourse or grab lunch at one of the many family-friendly restaurants nearby for a true family outing.

- Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park Sports Centre: Indoor Playroom In Sai Ying Pun
Steps from the pool and grassy picnic area with views of the harbour, what's not to love about the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park Sports Centre? Measuring 130m2, the "Forest Adventure" playroom has plenty for kids to play with together, helping them learn to interact with others and make new friends. Check online for the full schedule, as the room closes between sessions for cleaning and on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday mornings of each month for maintenance.

- Siu Sai Wan Sports Centre: Indoor Playroom In Siu Sai Wan
Your kids can burn off some steam amidst the murals of skyscrapers and buildings in this city-themed playroom on the eastern side of Hong Kong Island. The 151m2 playroom is right in the heart of the neighbourhood and the perfect place for junior to meet friends, run around and settle down before heading home. It's popular, so get there early. Sessions are 45 minutes each and hold up to 30 kids. We love the mini climbing wall.

- Island East Sports Centre: Indoor Playroom In Sai Wan Ho
This "Sailing Adventure" playroom near the Sai Wan Ho waterfront is a smaller 102m2 space for up to 20 kids per session, with 45-minute sessions between 8am and 9:45pm. Tickets are handed out 30 minutes before each session, so plan your visit around that. The harbourfront promenade is close by for a scoot afterwards.

- Smithfield Sports Centre: Indoor Playroom In Kennedy Town
Happy bunches living in K-Town will be in for a treat as there's a playroom conveniently located in your neck of the woods. Get your active little ones to roar it out at this dinosaur-themed playroom. Measuring 114m2, there's plenty of space for them to crawl around and re-enact Jurassic Park (minus the gruesome violence, of course) in this interactive playground.

- Stanley Sports Centre: Indoor Playroom In Stanley
Located conveniently along Stanley Market Road, you won't have to go very far for this ocean-themed public playroom, just steps from the beach. At 174m2 it's one of the roomier playrooms on the Island, with space for up to 26 kids. Not only is it a great way for your wee one to meet new friends, it's also an opportunity for you to get acquainted with your neighbourhood's mummies and daddies, too.

This mermaid-themed playroom is full of toys inspired by life under the sea. Housed inside the sports centre, older kids can stay entertained with various sports classes and facilities all under one roof. What's more, there's a gym for adults too.

Aberdeen families have their own "Ocean World" playroom (pictured) on the top floor of the municipal services building. The 130m2 room takes up to 25 kids per session, with tickets handed out 15 minutes before each one. The Aberdeen Promenade is a short walk away if you want a stroll afterwards.

FREE PLAYROOMS IN KOWLOON: HO MAN TIN & KWUN TONG
- Ho Man Tin Sports Centre: Indoor Playroom In Ho Man Tin
Kowloon dwellers can check out this sports centre for an adorable playroom done up like a colourful tropical forest. Swing around like an orangutan, prowl like a tiger, or slither like a snake, and your little Mowgli will have plenty to do. It's a compact 85m2 room for up to 20 kids, with 45-minute sessions between 9am and 8pm.

- Choi Wing Road Sports Centre: Indoor Playroom In Kwun Tong
This "Animal Kingdom" playroom is one of the biggest in Hong Kong at 350m2, with space for up to 46 kids per session. Entry is by queuing, first-come, first-served. Note it's closed for maintenance on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month until 3:30pm.

FREE PLAYROOMS IN TSEUNG KWAN O: VELODROME, TIU KENG LENG & HANG HAU
- Hong Kong Velodrome: Indoor Playroom In Tseung Kwan O
Set inside Velodrome Park, the Hong Kong Velodrome is home to one of the largest playrooms on our list, a 286m2 "X Games" themed space for up to 45 kids per session. Sessions here run for up to an hour. Afterwards, head outside to the park, where little ones can run free on the lush green lawns and playgrounds.

- Tiu Keng Leng Sports Centre: Indoor Playroom In Tiu Keng Leng
Things are just bigger out in Sai Kung. This sports centre boasts a 267m2 "Ocean World" playroom, about twice the size of many in the city, with room for up to 43 kids. The ocean theme is a nice way to get kids talking about sea life while they play.

Please note: this playroom is closed for refurbishment from 14 September to 31 October 2026. LCSD suggests the Hong Kong Velodrome or Tiu Keng Leng Sports Centre (above) in the meantime.
Also in TKO, the "Aqua World" playroom in the Sai Kung Tseung Kwan O Government Complex measures 226m2 and holds up to 40 kids. Tickets are handed out 15 minutes before each session, and it's closed for maintenance on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday mornings of each month.

- Tung Chung Man Tung Road Sports Centre: Indoor Playroom In Tung Chung
Tung Chung Man Tung Road Sports Centre offers plenty of sports, clubs and classes for all ages, plus a sailing-themed public playroom in its ample 145.4m2 space, with room for up to 48 kids per session. Tickets are handed out 15 minutes before each session.
