Considering the warm weather all year round in tropical Malaysia, it comes as no surprise that the mall culture is prevalent here, with most folks heading to the mall for the cool air-conditioning, and to indulge in leisure activities. From shopping and dining to entertainment and recreation, shopping malls in South East Asia have upped their game tremendously over the years. Malls are no longer a place just to shop, instead they’re now a lifestyle destination where there’s something for everyone. Here at Little Steps, we’ve rounded up the best malls in the Klang Valley that score high on the fun factor scale, just what you need to keep everyone in the family busy!

  • UTAMA SHOPPING CENTER: Mall In Petaling Jaya

    Spread across 5 million square feet of space and six retail levels, and touted as one of the top 10 largest in the world, 1 Utama Shopping Center has a dizzying number of options if you’re looking for something to do with the whole family. Outdoor enthusiasts can head to Asia’s largest indoor rock climbing gym, Camp5 and climb away, or try their hand at baseball and softball at It’s A Hit Batting Cage. For futsal fans, there are five futsal courts on the upper roof known as Padang@1U. There is also U-Bowl, a 36-lane bowling center, Neway karaoke center, CrossFire arcade, two major cinemas, a lush tropical garden known as the Rainforest filled with koi ponds and a suspension bridge. For nature lovers, sign up for the guided tour at the Secret Garden, a uniquely curated rooftop garden open on weekends. Older kids will also enjoy cracking their heads trying to find the escape route at Break the Code+. For young ones, sign up for clay crafting at Yenji Clay Craft, arts and crafts at Get Crafty, or sweat it out at the indoor playland, Starship Galactica. Parents will also be pleased to know that they are little kiddie cabbies available for rent at the Customer Service Center in the new wing, but remember to go early as they tend to run out real quick especially on weekends.

  • ATRIA SHOPPING GALLERY: Mall In Petaling Jaya

    Redeveloped neighborhood mall, Atria is now a sleek suburban shopping and edutainment destination, where a number of children-centric outlets are located on the second floor including Little Botz Academy, Yamaha Music School, The Little Tree House Kindergarten, and Play!Room where parents can drop off their kids while they shop. For a fun time, kids can opt for the Kiddie Car Rides and toy pony rides available on the same floor, or head to Jungle Gym. Several toy machine rides and claw machines can also be found around the mall. On the third floor, there’s also Molly Fantasy, an amusement center for little juniors filled with kiddy rides and a soft play area.

  • BERJAYA TIMES SQUARE: Mall At Times Square

    For kids who love mechanical rides, the main attraction at this mall will have to be the Berjaya Times Square Theme Park, a 133,000 square feet indoor amusement park filled with fun rides and games to keep children, young and old entertained. Located on Level 5 and 7, it claims to be the largest indoor theme park in Malaysia. When you wander around Berjaya Times Square, don’t forget to check out the Grand Musical Staircase which will thrill little ones as each step produces a delightful tune, bringing them to the Lower Ground Concourse. Access to the mall is fairly convenient with public transportation easily available, including the KL Monorail which connects to the mall.

  • CITTA MALL: Mall At Ara Damansara

    Citta Mall, a suburban strip mall at Ara Damansara has a number of learning centers catered for children including Julia Gabriel Center, I Discovery World, math enrichment center Treasure Box, and art school Jane Yap Atelier. There is also MBO Cinema here for movie buffs, Firezone Family KTV for some karaoke fun and Jungle Safari Playland for the little ones. Another popular haunt is Blokke, a fun café with a cheerful indoor playground and Lego education classes. On most weekends, keep an eye out for the CITTA Chill Out Weekend where a number of interactive, kid-friendly activities such as coloring contests, arts and crafts, and games take place.

  • IOI CITY MALL: Mall At Putrajaya

    Adventure seekers will enjoy District21, a 70,000 square feet action park which comprises of10 prominent attractions for all visitors to get them climbing, jumping, riding, sliding and flying. The attractions here include roller gliding, wall climbing, trampoline, go-pedals which are human-powered karts, a low ropes course for younger kids, the Maze which is a labyrinth of tunnels and cages, and more. Younger kids will also enjoy the mini train ride around the second floor which takes about five minutes, and the carousel at District21. For ice skaters, there’s Icescape Ice Rink, an Olympic-sized ice skating rink where lessons are available. One can also catch a movie at GSC Cinemas or opt for some bowling at Wangsa Bowl. For some fresh air, take a breather at the Symphony Walk where a water fountain sits, surrounded by the mall’s many cafes and restaurants.

  • SETIA CITY MALL: Mall At Setia Alam

    Setia City Mall, Malaysia’s first green retail mall caters for the residential catchment at Setia Alam. Patrons can enjoy the outdoors with plenty of green space, a water jet plaza and al fresco dining, while kids will love the padded playground conveniently located outside the mall. Indoors, they will be thrilled to spend time at amusement center, Molly Fantasy, while families can bowl at Wangsa Bowl, sing their hearts out at Wow Karaoke, or catch a movie at Golden Screen Cinemas. The mall is starting the construction of its Phase 2 expansion with an additional 200 shops to be added, and is set to be completed in 2019, so look out for more to come here!

  • SUNWAY PYRAMID: Mall At Petaling Jaya

    This Egyptian-inspired mall which a stunning façade boasts four million square feet of retail, entertainment and leisure outlets, and is home to a number of attractions including a world class ice skating rink Sunway Pyramid Ice, Galactic Laser for a fun laser tag game, Stars Archery, Sunway Mega Lanes for some bowling, and a large indoor soft play center and children retail area known as The Parenthood. On the Lower Ground Floor, there is also an indoor playground, and a mini amusement park with train rides, bumper cars, merry go round, ferry wheel and more. For parents with toddlers who tend to be little runners, Sunway Pyramid is one of the few malls that offers a child safety device in the form of a Child Distance Monitor and wristband. Available at the Information Counter for a refundable deposit, the beeper will ensure your child is well within sight. Kiddie cabbies are also available for rent here when your toddlers need a break from all that walking. Next door, there is Sunway Lagoon Theme Park where families can spend a whole day exploring the attractions here.

  • SURIA KLCC: Mall In KL's City Center

    Suria KLCC is a haven for locals and tourists, both young and old due to its strategic location next to the PETRONAS Twin Towers, and its offerings both indoors and outdoors. Within the mall, there’s the Petrosains Discovery Center and Aquaria KLCC, while outdoors, there’s KLCC Park, a lush, 50-acre area of lush greenery which includes an impressive children’s playground, a lovely wading pool which is a hit with young ones, a jogging track, sculptures, and the Esplanade, a 10,000 square feet man-made Lake Symphony where two musical fountains display over 150 unique programmed animations in a magical performance of sound and water. For the musically-inclined, there’s also the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra next door.

  • THE CURVE: Mall At Petaling Jaya

    The Curve has a well-designed Kids Zone on the First Floor which comes with not one but two free play areas for young ones. Kids can climb on a colorful, ship-inspired structure with slides, or explore the indoor playground. Coin-operated rides are also available scattered around on the same floor, along with a baby care room and toy stores like Early Learning Center and Lego. Learning centers such as Brainfit Studio, British Council and Lil Faculty pre-school are also conveniently located here. Fans of karaoke, pop by Red Box Karaoke, or browse the weekend flea markets for some bargains. For added entertainment, take a short walk on the covered walkway which links to Curve NX where KidZania is located. Over here, kids from four to 14 can play dress-up and experience real-life occupations in a fun, interactive environment.

  • THE MINES: Mall At Seri Kembangan

    Experience a touch of Venice at The Mines in Seri Kembangan which boasts a unique Venetian-like water canal within the mall. One can purchase tickets here to join the Mines Cruise which offers cruises and water tours around Mines Wellness City. Children will love the unique boat ride around the tranquil lake while the adults can enjoy the peaceful scenery. Option for dining on board is also available. Within the mall, there are other entertainment options including TGV Cinemas, a 6D Cinema known as Senoptium, soft play areas like Chatoys and Kid’z Paradise, and amusement centers filled with arcades and games called COBAY and Fun Factory.

  • THE SCHOOL: Mall At Petaling Jaya

    Known as Malaysia’s first enrichment mall, The School in Petaling Jaya houses a number of learning and enrichment centers for children including The Children’s House pre-school, Science Bridge Academy and Roboticist which offers robotics programs for children and teenagers. Every Sunday, a free indoor cycling event called ‘Sun Day Out’ takes place here for kids, where bicycles, scooters, skateboards and rollerblades are welcomed or you may borrow the few available. For parents who need their caffeine fix, head over to Tedboy Bakery or Bucket B Café, as both cafes offer a play area with plenty of toys for young tots, or you can opt to drop the kids off at one of the soft play centers here, The Kids or Beebop Circus. The mall also offers family-friendly facilities including a Mom’s Room as well as a Dad’s Room, and plays host to regular artisanal markets for budding entrepreneurs and activities for kids. Close by within walking distance is PJ Live Arts, a family theater that occasionally puts on plays and performances suitable for young children.
