The weather in KL can be a bit unpredictable – one minute it’s scorching hot and humid and the next minute, the heavens have opened up and you are caught in an enormous thunderstorm! For those looking for things to do indoors with the kids, this guide is for you. Little Steps has rounded up the Top Indoor activities in Kuala Lumpur that you can venture with the kiddies that will be totally unaffected by whatever Malaysian weather is thrown your way.
Looking for something unique that will entertain both you and the kids? It's so comforting when you spot your precious little munchkin settling down to read a good book. So why not turn their passion for reading into a day trip by visiting the fabulous National Library? You and your kiddos will be overwhelmed by the impressive selection of books available to browse or take home. The library also hosts various holiday programs, group readings and story-telling sessions so check out their website for dates and times. There is a new hypermedia center worth checking out too where kids can enjoy using the computers for research or to play educational games. An added bonus? Membership is free – perfect!

If you’ve got kids over the age of six, then check out one of KL’s fun laser tag arenas as it will be a definite hit. Invite all your kiddos' best buds and take them along for a unique and exciting game of tag involving infrared emitting targeting guns. Kids are split into two teams and will be engaged in various battle games during several ten minute rounds. The game is similar to paintball, but a lot less painful when you get hit! There are a few laser tag arenas around KL, but we personally like Laser Battle at Berjaya Times Square.

If your kids see themselves as Robin Hood or Legolas from Lord of the Rings, then this indoor activity will be right up their street! Stars Archery, the archery range at Sunway Pyramid, is an awesome way to spend the day and will give your kids an opportunity to notch a bow and, hopefully, clinch a bull’s eye! The space is bright and similar to a video game center, with numerous staff hovering nearby to help the aspiring archers to perfect their aim.

Super fun for the whole family (just as long as nobody is too competitive), bowling is a truly great way to pass the day all nice and cool and KL has plenty of bowling alleys to choose from. Our favorite is Cosmic Bowl at Mid Valley Megamall, which is a totally awesome glow in the dark bowling alley where everything has a UV glow - from the lanes, to the balls, to the pins. It can get a bit crowded on weekends so arrive early to book a lane, or call to book in advance.

It may seem a little crazy that you can ice skate when it’s a balmy and tropical 35 degrees outside, but you can – and it sure is a splendid way to keep cool! You’ll feel like it’s winter when you pull on your gloves, scarf and hat and take to the ice at Sunway Pyramid Ice. Lace up your skates and glide along the smooth ice to the sounds of the funky resident DJ. The bright lights and funky music are guaranteed to while away the hours.

Yes, really, KL has its very own, pretty awesome, indoor theme park! The Berjaya Times Square Theme Park is a thrilling experience whether it’s raining outside or not. Located within the Berjaya Times Square Mall, this expansive amusement park is the biggest in Malaysia. Located on the fifth floor in one of KL’s largest malls, this is a seriously high-octane way to spend a rainy, or sweaty day indoors.

The cinema is a fab way for you and the fam to beat the heat or get out of the rain! With so many cinema choices in KL, we are seriously spoiled. For a super reasonable option, book the Standard Class, or for slightly bigger seats and more comfort, Premier is a must. If you really want pure indulgence, then Gold Class is the way to go. Golden Screen Cinemas are always a good choice as they screen all the latest films and have a number of locations in and around the city. If you have little kids in tow, we definitely suggest the MBO Cinema at the Starling (check it out here), which caters to those who may find it a bit more difficult to stay in their seats for the entire length of the movie!
