Bring on the bloggers! In this new series, Little Steps is connecting with Asia’s leading mom and dad bloggers to find out more about their families, their blogs, and of course, their favorite outings, restaurants, and more! First up, we meet Amanda Griffin Jacob, founders of Glam-O-Mamas.
Glam-O-Mamas actually started out as a company specializing in events for children and moms in the Philippines. My friend and I both had a background in PR and events and we wanted to put up fantastic experiences for moms and their babies. I knew that the company needed a website, but my idea was to make it more of an online support community for new moms by moms because as a new mom myself I would struggle sometimes wondering if I was on the right track with this mommyhood gig. I knew that if I was feeling like that, then there must be other moms who felt the same way, and we could support one another.
My main readership is still the Philippines, but I do get readers from all over the world. I’m hoping to have a localized Singaporean Glam-O-Mamas site as well since I am moving there soon.
I just finished taking a PET course with Catherine Banson so currently her blog is one of my favorites: The Acorn Within. She makes everything relatable. She also turned me onto Dr. Laura Markam’s Aha Parenting.
As of this moment, Hong Kong is still my city (although that is changing imminently). Our favorite outings are at the American Club in Tai Tam because it is around the corner from our house. You can’t beat the pool and Eagle’s Nest (the 3 story play area). My kids also do a lot of extracurricular activities there (swimming, rugby, soccer).
We love Choice Cooperative. Fantastic playroom and healthy eats! Tree Café in Horizon Plaza is also good. Spacious play area with lots of wooden toys and books and I love shopping after.
We are an outdoorsy family so we love the Tai Tam reservoir for family walks, scootering, and runs. It’s just a gorgeous setting with rolling hills and vegetation as well as the beautiful reservoir. You can have picnics there too.
Learn! No one is born knowing how to parent properly. At least I know that’s true for me and most people I know. Don’t beat yourself up when you think you may be failing at some aspect of parenting. I find the best thing to do is to try and gain insight and different perspectives/techniques from reference books, experts, friends. You never stop learning when you are a parent. You constantly have to adjust and adapt.
Bring plenty of distractions. Toys, books, and yes, the dreaded ipad. It has saved us on many a long flight. I also make sure that I bring healthy snacks and meals for my kids. Airplane food is usually pretty unhealthy and my kids are picky so I know I need to come prepared.
Discovery Shores in Boracay is always a favorite with us. Getting there can be quite an adventure, but once you’re there it is worth it. The staff and service in Discovery Shores is world class. They go out of their way to make you feel special and at home. Kids love the gorgeous white powdery sand, ocean, and hotel swimming pool. The resort also has a kids’ club, which has daily activities and a baby-sitting service if you want to have dinner outside of the resort.
