In this guide, you’ll discover which hospitals offer 24-hour emergency care and how to locate the one nearest to you. Before making a decision, take a moment to review our essential tips for navigating emergency services.

Here are some useful facts that can help:

  • If you need an ambulance, call 999
    • Ambulance services are free, and it will ONLY take you to the nearest public hospital

When you are at a public hospital, take note of the following:

  • Triage will assess based on how URGENT your condition is and will therefore determine how to prioritize and assign medical attention
  • Please present your HKID
    • For minors, please bring a copy of their Birth Certificate/Passport
  • Cash or Octopus
    • Upon arriving at A&E you will be asked to pay HK$180
    • HK$5o will be paid if you attend the outpatient clinic
    • Medication and follow-ups (if needed) are charged separately
  • The waiting time might be long!
    • Click here for an estimated waiting time at A&E; use this as a way to determine which A&E you’d like to head to.
    • Bring items such as:
      • Snacks, drinks – there are vending machines available, but they might not have what you’re looking for
      • Hoodies, cardigans to keep you warm
      • Power banks
      • Puzzles, your child’s favorite stuffed toy, or a book to read
  • And of course, be patient! It can get frustrating, but public hospital A&Es do get busy

Now, if you’d like to avoid long wait times and don’t mind paying extra or have covered insurance, read on to know which private hospitals in Hong Kong also provide 24-hour urgent outpatient care. Prices vary depending on day and time. Remember to also bring your HKID and your child’s birth certificate/passport.
