Dragon’s Back Hike In Hong Kong

How To Get There And Why It Rocks?

Dragon's Back Hike in Hong Kong

So you’ve done a few strolls with the kids, and you think they’re ready for more? It’s time for the quintessential Hong Kong hike – Dragon’s Back – otherwise known as Section 8 of the Hong Kong Trail. Lace up your sneakers, load the pack up with water and snacks, and head out for a gorgeous and rewarding family hike!

How to Get To Dragon’s Back Hike: From the Shau Kei Wan stop on the MTR Island Line, take the #9 bus towards Shek-O and get off at Cape Collinson Road. Or have a taxi drop you off at the Cape Collinson Crematorium in Chai Wan. You’ll see a steep set of stairs just past the crematorium which you ascend to get to the start of the trail.

What to Expect: Follow the signs to Dragon’s Back. It’s 2.5 km to the highest peak, and about another 1.5 km down to the end of the trail at Shek-O Road. The trail is well-marked, unpaved and rocky, with loads of ups and downs and some shade but mostly not. A few areas may require kids to scramble. They’ll love the challenge and will get a great workout!

Tips: Bring sunscreen, more water than you expect (climbing makes a lil’ hiker thirsty!) and special snacks, and be prepared to take breaks. And don’t forget your camera, as the views of the mountains, Big Wave Bay and Shek-O are just stunning! You may even see paragliders up-close, as we did!

The Reward: Aside from the glorious feeling of having done a “real” hike with the kids, you’ll end up at Shek-O Road, directly in front of the #9 bus stop at To Tei Wan. Take it a few stops to Shek-O Beach for a swim and some well-deserved fresh lemonades and delicious hand-cut fries at Cococabana!
