When students return to the Canadian International School on the Hong Kong campus, some areas will look unrecognizable, following extensive renovations in the middle of 2020. The school’s main cafeteria underwent a full revamp; it includes a new seating area, serving stations, and a fully renovated back kitchen, which allows cafeteria staff to serve food that’s freshly made and locally sourced when possible. Meanwhile, the classrooms serving Grade 5 and 6 students have a completely different architectural layout; an open-plan design and breakout spaces contribute to the updated, modern feel. This is fabulous - we love student innovations! Students from HKA in Sai Kung, Hong Kong created their own app and map around Sai Kung. Each Wednesday students work on ‘passion projects’ with peers from different grades and teachers from different disciplines that share a common interest. For a period of 8 weeks, they dive deep into a subject in a real-life scenario such as: designing your own clothes, building your own computers, or creating a live puppet theatre performance. One of these projects was a cultural mapping project with iDiscover, where a group of 16 students mapped their own neighborhood through a step-by-step approach involving games, site surveys, interviews, photography, creative writing, and design. The content was uploaded into the iDiscover App and it is now available as a 1-hour walking itinerary that highlights the best of Sai Kung.

In June, Hong Kong International School (HKIS) was awarded the Best Student-Centered School. Principle Dr. Lovelin states, "That’s not only excellence in academics, but excellence in creating a caring community that supports students and their specific interests. In addition, across all grade levels, we want to provide more choices to our students and give them different opportunities to bring learning from different subjects together in different environments." This award was given for the school's ability to adapt to the COVID-19 situation while making sure the students were supported and connected to the school.
