Guangzhou is the easiest weekend away from Hong Kong that most families haven’t done yet. It’s 48 minutes from West Kowloon by train (book tickets here), with theme park hotels, skyline suites and a water park resort to choose from. Here’s how to pick. Doing Chimelong, the city’s giant resort with a safari park, rides, a water park and a circus? Stay on site. Want museums, malls and the Canton Tower? Stay in the city.
Timing tip: Avoid the Canton Fair. Guangzhou’s huge trade fair runs twice a year, usually mid-April to early May and mid-October to early November, and hotel rates across the city jump while rooms sell out fast. If your dates are flexible, book outside those windows, or lock in early if you can’t.
Getting there from Hong Kong: The high-speed train from West Kowloon reaches Guangzhou South in about 48 minutes. It’s the closest station to Chimelong and a short taxi or metro ride to most city hotels. Each hotel below has its own getting-there note.

Chimelong Panda Hotel sits right inside Chimelong Tourist Resort, next to Chimelong Paradise, the Water Park, the Safari Park and the International Circus. The whole hotel is built around the Panda Triplets from a popular Chinese kids' cartoon, with rooms split across four character themes. Outside, there are animal zones with peacocks and other rare birds to wander between park days. It's the pick if your kids are under 8 and you want the full Chimelong bubble. Kids under 3, or under 1m tall, eat free at the resort hotel buffets.

Chimelong Xiangjiang Hotel sits just outside the main resort, with 333 rooms themed around cartoon tigers, giraffes and elephants. Family rooms have a separate living area and a dedicated kids' bed, so lights-out doesn't mean everyone goes to bed at 7.30pm. There's a 3,000sqm playground, daytime circus acts at the hotel, and a free shuttle to Chimelong Safari Park (about eight minutes). One thing to know: there's no pool. Rooms started from around US$146 at the time of writing.

Shangri-La Guangzhou [check URL] sits on 12 acres of gardens by the Pearl River, which is rare for a big-city hotel. Kids get an indoor pool with a waterslide and a free kids' club, so there's a plan B for rainy afternoons. With 704 rooms, it's a big property, and it sits right next to the Canton Fair Complex. That makes it handy if one parent is in Guangzhou for work and the family is tagging along. The Canton Tower is a short drive away.
