Little Steps Insider Tips

West Lake gets packed during Golden Week (October 1-7), so arrive by 8am and save the pop-up for the afternoon. Tourist buses No. 1 and No. 2 stop right at Liulang Wenying. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you leave Hong Kong.

Is Hangzhou a good family trip from Hong Kong?

Yes, Hangzhou works well for families because it’s a direct train ride from West Kowloon and West Lake is free to explore. Kids get boat rides, lakeside lawns and tea hill walks, while parents get an easy, low-stress city break with good food.

How long is the train from Hong Kong to Hangzhou?

The direct daytime high-speed train takes about 6 hours 52 minutes. The G902 leaves Hong Kong West Kowloon at 11:35am and reaches Hangzhou East at 6:27pm. An overnight sleeper, the G900, departs at 8pm and arrives just after 6am the next morning.

What is the best time to visit West Lake with kids?

Early mornings on weekdays are best. West Lake is one of China’s busiest spots during public holidays, especially Golden Week from October 1-7. Arrive before 8am for quieter paths, cooler weather and easier stroller access along the famous causeways and bridges.

What is KAWS COMPANION?

COMPANION is the signature character of US artist KAWS, known for its crossed-out eyes. It has appeared as giant KAWS:HOLIDAY sculptures around the world, including a 37-meter version in Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour in 2019 and a 30-meter robot in Hangzhou in 2026.

Do I need cash in Hangzhou?

Mostly no. Most shops, taxis and food stalls in Hangzhou accept Alipay or WeChat Pay, and both apps let visitors link a foreign bank card. Set them up in Hong Kong before you travel, and carry a little cash as a backup.
