Starting April 1, 2026, hailing a taxi in Hong Kong is about to get a whole lot easier—and faster. Taxi drivers will now be required to offer at least two electronic payment options: one QR code-based method, like Alipay, WeChat Pay, or BoC Pay, and one non-QR code option, such as Octopus cards, credit cards, or FPS. This move aims to modernize the city’s taxi services, bringing them in line with global trends in digital payments.
For passengers, this means no more scrambling for cash while a frustrated driver waits. Instead, payments are now as simple as tapping a card or scanning a code.
The Assistant Commissioner for Transport revealed that roughly one-third of Hong Kong’s taxis are already equipped with integrated payment terminals that support multiple payment methods. Drivers have embraced the new legislation, noting that it has boosted their business. Many customers now specifically inquire about cashless payment options before getting into a taxi. So far, 40,000 drivers have registered for e-payment systems, covering the majority of the city’s taxi fleet.
While cash will still be an option, it’s clear that digital payments are the way forward. With stickers on taxi windows displaying available payment methods, passengers can now hop in knowing they’ll have a hassle-free ride. Hong Kong’s transition to mandatory e-payments is a significant step toward streamlining daily life and making the city more connected in today’s digital world.
So, the next time you catch a cab, leave your cash at home and enjoy the convenience of going cashless.
