What do families need to know before crossing the Hong Kong to Shenzhen border?

Hong Kong and Shenzhen share several land borders ideal for families. Popular options include Lo Wu, Futian, Shenzhen Bay, and 24-hour Huanggang. Use MTR East Rail for Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau, or high-speed rail from West Kowloon.

Carry passports and check visa needs—many get Shenzhen VOA. Queues are common on weekends.

For those with the Mainland China Permit, be sure to bring this along but also bring along your passport as well.  One Little Steps team members got pulled over recently and a passport was required.

Which Hong Kong Shenzhen border crossing is best for families with kids?

  • Louwu: This is probably the most popular as it is situated right next to the Louwu Shopping Centre and its ideal if you are going to Dafen Art Village. It can be busy and chaotic, but that’s part of the fun.  We usually try to cross this border in the morning.
  • Futian (Lok Ma Chau) is often easiest for families due to efficient MTR access and shorter waits. You would use this if you want to visit the Tenz Spa (right next door) and other fun areas like OCT Loft.  It is also where you would go if you are looking to visit MixC City / Coco Park / Upper Hills malls.

What documents do I need to cross from Hong Kong to Shenzhen with children?  Tell me about Visa On Arrival?

Everyone needs a valid passport. Foreigners may use a visa-on-arrival at select points. Children require their own documents. Shenzhen Visa-on Arrival is a 5-day visa for tourists.

  • Visa On Arrival Info:  During the 5 days, tourists cannot leave Shenzhen for other mainland Chinese cities.  Most countries can access the five-day VOA, including the USA, UK, Canada, France, Australia, Germany, Korea, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.  Click here for information.  You can find our review here as well.

How long does it take to cross the Hong Kong to Shenzhen border with kids?

Expect 30-90 minutes, including immigration. Choose off-peak times and dedicated foreigner lanes to speed things up. Bring snacks and entertainment for little ones.

  • Want to take a high-speed train? You can travel quickly and cheaply from Hong Kong to Shenzhen by high-speed train. Trains leave every five minutes from West Kowloon Station to Futian (14 minutes) or Shenzhen North (18 minutes), with the first train at 7:01am and the last at 11pm. Easiest for most people: Buy in person at West Kowloon Station (ticket counters or machines). You can buy on the day — no need to book far in advance for short trips.
