Gingko House has launched a long-term food assistance program to address the ongoing needs of the community. With 1 in 5 citizens already living in poverty, the initiative aims to provide support through its social enterprise branches. Each day, 800 free, high-quality nutritional rice and soup lunch sets are prepared and distributed to individuals with various needs. Volunteers play a crucial role in packing the meals, which are tailored to accommodate different dietary requirements, and assisting with registration and distribution to 150 individuals or families who struggle with daily food expenditures, including low-income individuals, the unemployed, elderly with limited mobility, people experiencing homelessness, and families receiving CCSA. Volunteers will receive a briefing upon arrival, work in teams to pack the meals and support the registration and distribution processes at the center. Click here for more information.
Plastic Free Seas is organizing a beach cleanup event at a rocky beach in Clearwater Bay. Volunteers are required to be comfortable walking on small to medium-sized rocks. It's important to note that there are no facilities available at the beach.
Volunteers should come prepared with a full reusable water bottle (1L-2L), wear closed-toe sturdy shoes (like running shoes, no flip flops), apply suntan lotion and bug spray, wear light and comfortable clothing along with a hat, and bring a rain jacket if there's a chance of rain (no disposable raincoats, please). Gloves and bags will be provided for the cleanup. Experienced staff will be present to ensure an educational experience for all participants. The meeting point is Hang Hau MTR station, outside exit B1, at 9:20 am sharp. Click here for more information.
Many families around Hong Kong are facing unprecedented challenges and relying on emergency assistance from charities for their basic food needs. This volunteer activity focuses on rescuing surplus food stocks and ensuring their proper management before distributing them to those in need, including low-income families, children, seniors, the homeless, refugees, and migrant workers. Volunteers will be stationed at Feeding Hong Kong's warehouse in Yau Tong, where they will assist the staff in sorting, checking, and packing essential items such as rice, noodles, cooking oil, and canned food into individual boxes. Each box will provide 14 meals for a family. Gloves will be provided to ensure safety during the packing process. Volunteers need to be physically healthy, as lifting boxes may be required. Individuals with neck and back issues or injuries to their hands and legs should consider the suitability of this volunteer activity. The recommended attire for the warehouse work is jeans and trainers, while open-toe shoes or heels are not permitted due to safety reasons. For more information and to sign up, click here!
The urgency to reduce, reuse, and recycle in Hong Kong has reached unprecedented heights. In early 2022, it was estimated that hotel quarantine guests alone had used and disposed of over 100 million pieces of plastic items. Shockingly, projections indicate that by 2030, Hong Kong will be sending 4.2 billion single-use takeaway containers to landfills each year. To address this pressing issue, HandsOn Hong Kong and V Cycle have joined forces to launch 'ReThink Plastic', an initiative that empowers Hongkongers to recycle their single-use plastic correctly and encourages them to reconsider the impact of their everyday choices. Volunteers are invited to actively participate in the recycling process at the V Cycle factory. Before getting directly involved, volunteers will receive a comprehensive 45-minute briefing and tour. During the activity, volunteers will work alongside elderly cardboard collectors employed by V Cycle, providing them with dignified employment opportunities.
For volunteers aged 6-12, participation in this activity requires attendance with a guardian, and online registration should be completed together. Click here to sign up.
Volunteers in this activity will play a crucial role in preparing donated hotel soaps for recycling and distribution to underprivileged families and schools in disadvantaged communities worldwide, with a particular focus on Asia. By participating in the soap recycling process, volunteers also contribute to environmental protection efforts in Hong Kong. The tasks for volunteers include sorting, carving, and recycling soap, with guidance provided by Soap Cycling staff. Registration with HandsOn Hong Kong is mandatory for all volunteers participating in this activity. If volunteers wish to bring a friend or family member, they must also register with HandsOn and sign up for the activity separately. Click here for more information.
Volunteers should be at least 12 years old to attend this activity without a parent or guardian. For those who wish to bring children over the age of 7, please create a children's account. Alternatively, you can send an email to HOHK@handsonhongkong.org to register them.
