Fireflies Spotting At Pasir Ris Park
Let Them Light Up The Sky!
Who would have thought that in the brightly lit isle of Singapore you’d get to see a whole ton of fireflies? Yes, you heard us right! Through the efforts of the National Parks Board (NParks) and in collaboration with tech-giant Panasonic, more fireflies can be spotted in Pasir Ris Park’s mangrove habitat. The Firefly Species Recovery Programme seeks to improve the firefly habitat in that area and also to understand the optimal conditions for the fireflies to thrive. Why are fireflies so important? They indicate a healthy mangrove habitat!
Pasir Ris is the only place where you can get up close and personal with these lightning bugs and with certain measures put in place to preserve these fascinating beetles, you can be assured to see them when you’re out on an adventure with the family. These measures include using wildlife-friendly lights along the mangrove zone, mangrove trees to be planted to provide a conducive habitat for the fireflies, plus regular firefly population surveys will be conducted by Panasonic’s staff to monitor how effective these measures are.
