As parents, when we look at an SUV, we need it to do the heavy lifting of family life. It’s not about off-roading anymore; it’s about conquering the grocery run and the school drop-off with maximum efficiency and minimum fuss. The new Volkswagen Tiguan Mild Hybrid 1.5 eTSI, while softer on performance than its predecessors, is arguably smarter and more family-focused than ever.
The Tiguan may be tuned to fit into the Category A COE bracket with its 1.5-litre mild-hybrid engine, but this shifts the focus to practical, thoughtful features that make everyday driving much easier.
The new Tiguan has been packaged well, and the interior feels noticeably more spacious than before. While the physical wheelbase is the same, the overall length has increased, which directly translates to better family utility.
Cavernous, Flexible Cargo: The boot space has increased by 37 litres to a very generous 557 litres with the rear seats up. For when you need maximum room, the rear seats can slide forward (much like its Audi Q3 cousin) to expand the cargo area to 652 litres. You can also fold the 40:20:40 split rear seats completely for massive hauls.
Rear Seats That Move: The ability to slide the rear seats forward and back adds crucial versatility, allowing us to balance legroom for the kids with cargo space for luggage.
Comfort Features: The Life Plus variant comes well-equipped, featuring comfort items like ventilated front seats with massage—a great perk for parents who spend a lot of time behind the wheel. The climate control buttons for air-con and seat cooling are conveniently placed at the base of the main screen for quick, easy access.
Volkswagen has packed the new Tiguan with technology designed to simplify things, which is exactly what we need when the back seats are noisy.
Large Infotainment: The high-resolution 15-inch ‘Discover Pro’ infotainment touchscreen is impressive and is canted towards the driver for easy viewing and operation.
Wireless Connectivity: Wireless support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard, keeping our devices connected seamlessly.
IDA Voice Assistant: The IDA voice assistant is a welcome layer of convenience, helping us access features that might be buried in the screen menus while we are driving.
The 1.5-litre mild hybrid engine (128hp/220Nm) has a leisurely 0-100km/h time of 10.6 seconds, but it is designed with superb efficiency in mind rather than speed – a major win for the family budget.
Stellar Fuel Economy: The mild-hybrid powertrain truly shines in its ability to sip fuel. We can vouch for its stellar fuel efficiency, with reviewers achieving real-world figures of up to 18 to 20.1 km/L. This is thanks to the MHEV technology that allows the car to coast with the engine completely off and run on only two cylinders under lighter loads.
The new Tiguan has put all worries about packing space to rest. This new generation of the SUV makes surprisingly clever use of its dimensions: although it's only slightly longer than the model it replaces, the boot capacity has seen an impressive jump of 37 litres! You now get a generous minimum of 557 litres, which expands all the way up to 652 litres (when loaded to the height of the rear seat backrests). This means ample, flexible space for the whole family's gear, whether you're tackling the weekly supermarket trip or packing for a weekend getaway. It’s all the room you need, without feeling like you’re driving a massive car.
Want more? We absolutely love the one-click fold-down back seats feature! This really makes it superbly easy to expand the boot size all in one motion!
Our take? The Volkswagen Tiguan is a highly accomplished SUV that truly understands the practical needs of a family. It’s got a quality interior, a versatile seating and cargo area, and handling that’s surprisingly agile for an SUV. While the mild-hybrid engine may not thrill you, its excellent fuel economy and efficiency are the kind of rational, long-term benefits that we, parents, appreciate most. It's versatile, comfortable, and packed with the right features to make family life on the road easier.
Who needs a digital screen when you have the sky? The Tiguan offers an available Panoramic Sunroof that is a huge hit with the kids, turning even the most mundane journey into an open, airy experience.
A Room With a View: The panoramic glass covers a large portion of the roof, flooding the cabin with natural light. This makes the spacious interior feel even bigger, helping to prevent that "cooped-up" feeling, especially on long road trips.
Touch-of-a-Button Fresh Air: With a simple touch, the roof opens up, allowing fresh air to flow through the cabin. The two large, black-tinted windows keep the direct sun rays gentle, but when you want that true open-air feeling, you get it without the noise and wind of rolling down all the side windows.
Starry Nights: For evening drives, the panoramic view is a fantastic source of entertainment for children in the rear seats, letting them gaze up at the night sky or watch the city lights pass by. It adds a touch of simple wonder to the everyday drive.
