Where To Find Props For A Spine-Chilling Party

Throwing a Halloween party or decorating the house for trick-or-treaters? You’ll need the props: pumpkins, skeletons, cobwebs, masks and plenty of fake blood. Kuala Lumpur has lots of shops that stock the lot, from budget chains in the malls to party wholesalers in Chinatown, and there are a few places to pick up a real pumpkin for carving too. Here’s where to shop.

PUMPKINS: Where To Buy Pumpkins In KL?
Big orange carving pumpkins are hard to find in KL, so it pays to plan ahead.- Premium grocers: B.I.G. (Ben's Independent Grocer) usually has a good mix of real pumpkins in different sizes, shapes and colours around Halloween. Village Grocer and Jaya Grocer are worth checking too, but stock varies by branch, so call ahead.
- Local pumpkins: Labu manis, the local pumpkin sold at supermarkets and wet markets, costs around RM7 per kilo at Jaya Grocer. It's squatter and tougher-skinned than a carving pumpkin but works well for a small jack-o'-lantern. Use a sturdy serrated knife, and leave the cutting to the grown-ups.
- Plastic pumpkins: For a pumpkin you can bring out every year, Daiso, Mr. D.I.Y., S&J Co. and Balloon Wonderland all sell plastic pumpkins and pumpkin candy buckets.
- No pumpkin? Try a watermelon. They're easy to find all year and carve in much the same way.

Japanese chain Daiso is the go-to for cheap Halloween decor, as most items sell at one flat price. Come October, selected stores bring in capes, witches' hats, masks, headbands, plastic pumpkins, hanging decorations and a few costumes. Not every outlet carries the seasonal range, so call ahead before you make the trip.
