Air Quality Index Explained

What To Know +

Listen up!  An air purifier is important in ensuring we enjoy good air quality all the time. In a few sample readings done by Renaud, the winter readings in Wan Chai is lowered from 700,000 particles (Very Unhealthy) to 40,000 particles (moderate) after the air purifier is turned on for 20 minutes. Using an air purifier can provide a more livable environment for people who have respiratory illness and asthma, as well as helping to lower the chances of your family becoming sick.  For those not sure on which model to choose, Renaud offers free home tests and can give you recommendations for your home size and lifestyle needs.  Simply email support@renaud.hk to get sorted.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

*AIR QUALITY INDEX: We hear about the Air Quality Index (AQI) from weather reports all the time, and it is an important resource for local residents to learn just how much pollution may affect their day.  It is especially useful for mums and dads on the go to see if the weather is suitable for their little ones. The AQI provides simple information about the local air quality so you can be prepared and protect your health on highly polluted days.

*AIR POLLUTANTS: The AQI calculates five major air pollutants – ground level ozone (03), particulate matter (PM2.5/PM10), carbon monoxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Be sure to keep track of ground level ozone (O3) and particulate matter (PM2.5/PM10) because they pose the greatest threat to our health.

*CATEGORIES: The AQI is broken down into 6 different categories: good, moderate, unhealthy for sensitive groups, unhealthy, very unhealthy and hazardous.

*RISKS: The potential risks posed by different levels varies depending on who you are. Readings can advise you to reduce outdoor physical exertion as well as time they spend outside during periods.

*WEATHER: The readings are usually worst during the winter because of the northerly winds carrying particles from our neighboring factories in Guangdong. The cooler weather also doesn’t help because it traps the emissions in the city valleys.
