Based in beautiful Sai Kung, Hong Kong Academy (HKA) is a non-profit, independent IB World School for students aged 2-18 years old. They provide a well-rounded curriculum and co-curriculum that encourages all learners to find joy in learning and fulfill their greatest potential.
This year HKA is excited to celebrate their 20th anniversary and 10th graduating class! They first opened their red doors on Stubbs Road to just three Primary School students in August 2000, graduated their first IB Diploma cohort in 2012, and moved to Sai Kung campus in 2013.
HKA prides itself on encouraging students to see themselves as caretakers of our planet and our communities. Through building meaningful relationships at local and global levels, HKA students learn how to thoughtfully engage in responsible action and contribute to our changing world. HKA values every learner as an individual with their intentionally small class sizes and low student-to-teacher ratio fostering a strong sense of personal identity and wellbeing.
Starting from Pre-K and throughout Primary School, students at HKA learn about their rights and responsibilities as citizens of the world and are encouraged to ask rich and personally relevant questions that help them engage with their local community. They then have authentic opportunities to take these questions into the field and learn more about how various systems, organizations, and individuals work by seeing them in action. From wildlife and environmental conservation to caring for vulnerable members of society, students learn that we all have the ability to make a positive impact on people and the planet.
Each month HKA organizes a Casual Dress Day to build even stronger relationships with local organizations and partners. Grade 4 students were recently learning about the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child with the central idea that human rights are created for all people. HKA students decided to partner with Feeding Hong Kong by running an awareness-raising campaign and collecting cash donations and food supplies. These supplies were sorted and packed by the students for distribution to families in need!
HKA students continue to grow as global citizens in Secondary School. They explore challenging issues and real-world problems during specialist lessons and school clubs and often connect their learnings to their own lives and interests beyond school. Each year, many student-led projects see HKA students thinking and acting as responsible and passionate global citizens. (check out HKA's video in the intro - where 4 HKA students explained how they Learned to Make a Difference)
From the youngest years to graduation and beyond, HKA students are immersed in a learning journey that inspires them to think beyond themselves and become self-directed, positive contributors to their community!
