Planning a day out in Central? There’s a new place to start it. THE CHATER has opened on 2/F of LANDMARK CHATER as the signature pitstop of Destination CENTRAL. The brand-new menus come from the culinary team at Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, so you know that anything from their grab-and-go snacks to a long lunch or evening drinks will be good.
Think of THE CHATER as a waiting lounge before your Central adventure begins. It’s a relaxed, sociable spot to refuel and regroup, whether you’re with a pram, meeting friends or grabbing a quick weekday lunch.
It also sits at the heart of the wider Destination CENTRAL experience. That includes Louis Vuitton’s monumental mega-art installation, the LANDMARK Tram Station and Heritage Route created with Hong Kong Tramways (little tram fans, take note!) and exclusive dining privileges at more than 40 partners across the district.
Menu Highlights at THE CHATER for Families
Mandarin Oriental brings its trademark precision and refinement to a casual, all-day setting, with dishes that switch easily between Hong Kong and international flavours:

The interiors were inspired by grand station lounges from the golden age of travel. Head up to Platform 1889 on the 3/F terrace (opening October 23, 2026), a feature styled like a railway carriage. It’s named after the year Hongkong Land was founded and has panoramic views of the Louis Vuitton installation and the city skyline.
Little Steps Insider Tip: Treat THE CHATER as a smart Central pitstop. The Hainanese Chicken Rice and the Charcoal Duck bun are the easiest plates to share as a family, and the HK$328 weekday set lunch is good value for the quality. The station-lounge space is elegant and fairly calm at lunchtime. Evenings are more about after-office drinks and cocktails, so go earlier with younger kids. Once everyone has eaten, pop up to Platform 1889 on 3/F for a quick photo with the Louis Vuitton installation and the skyline behind you.
Practical Tips for Visiting THE CHATER with Kids
What to Do Nearby
You’re in the heart of Central. Walk to Tai Kwun for its courtyards and family programs, Hong Kong Park for the playground and aviary, or the Mid-Levels Escalator. Chater Road itself hosts events from time to time. The LANDMARK complex is stroller-friendly, with lifts and connected walkways.
Is The Chater in Central good for kids?
Yes for older kids and calmer family lunches. The station-lounge space is elegant and quieter at lunchtime, with shareable plates like Hainanese chicken rice and the charcoal duck bun from the Mandarin Oriental team. It is less ideal for energetic toddlers or late evenings when it leans more toward after-office drinks.
What are the opening hours at The Chater?
Monday to Friday it runs 7:30am to 10pm. Saturday is 11am to 10pm. It is closed on Sundays and public holidays. Aim for weekday lunch or early afternoon with kids so you catch the practical set lunch before the bar vibe takes over.
Does The Chater have a kids menu or family-friendly dishes?
There is no dedicated kids menu, but several plates work well for families. Try the Hainanese chicken rice with fragrant oil rice and soup, the confit duck charcoal bun, or the weekday set lunch from HK$328. Bubble tea options and desserts such as Mont Blanc or milk-tea ice cream make easy sweet finishes.
Is The Chater stroller-friendly?
Yes. It sits on 2/F of LANDMARK CHATER with easy lift access and indoor walkways through the complex, so prams roll in without stairs. The refined interiors mean it suits a relaxed stop better than a high-energy play session. Watch little ones near edges if you head up to the Platform 1889 terrace (opening 23 October 2026) for skyline and Louis Vuitton installation views.
What’s near The Chater for a family day in Central?
You are right in the middle of Central. Walk to Tai Kwun for courtyards and family programmes, Hong Kong Park for the playground and aviary, or the Mid-Levels Escalator. The LANDMARK complex itself is fully connected and stroller-friendly. For more ideas see the Family-Friendly Neighborhood Guide To Central or the 60 Best Family-Friendly Restaurants In Hong Kong.
Want more Central Fun?
It gives families a reliable, high-quality all-day option in the middle of Central with recognisable plates (chicken rice, duck bun) executed by a Mandarin Oriental culinary team. The travel-inspired design and Destination CENTRAL connection make it feel special without requiring a formal reservation for every visit. Convenient for parents combining a meal with Tai Kwun, Hong Kong Park or Landmark shopping.
Parents who want a polished but accessible Central lunch, families with older kids who appreciate better-than-average mall dining, and anyone using LANDMARK as a base. Less ideal as a loud, high-energy kids’ restaurant or a late-evening destination with toddlers.
Opening Hours: Mon-Fri: 7:30am-10pm | Sat: 11am-10pm (Closed on Sun & Public Holidays)
