In early 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic was starting to spread worldwide, the team behind Masklab discovered that many new factories opening to take advantage of the global need for masks were using sub-standard materials to undercut the market. They mobilized quickly, purchasing machines from Taiwan and turning their production facility into an ISO-certified cleanroom that satisfied the highest standards regarding transparency and accountability. They now pump out between 50,000 and 100,000 masks per day, and the factory will soon be opened for tours.

Masklab has five retail outlets around Hong Kong, including Causeway Bay, Central, Tuen Mun, and Mong Kok, and you can also purchase masks online with free delivery for orders over HK$200. They offer typical surgical masks in all junior sizes and the increasingly popular Korean-style respirator masks, which are ideal for Hong Kong’s hot summers as they create a space between your face and the mask, which makes breathing easier. Patterns range from floral designs and geometric shapes to holiday-inspired themes, with fun lines such as Friendly Dinosaurs, Under the Sea, and No Drama Llama for kids.

The one downside to these masks is that, in addition to the masks being disposable, they all come in individually wrapped plastic. But the plastic can be saved and recycled, and that could eliminate some of the waste.
