Hong Kong Makes History

Hong Kong is the standout story of this year’s edition. For the very first time, two Hong Kong universities have broken into the global top 20, cementing the city’s reputation as one of the world’s premier education hubs. Five Hong Kong institutions rank in the global top 100, and QS named Hong Kong Asia’s most improved higher education system for the second consecutive year.

Here’s how the city’s universities performed:

  • HKU (University of Hong Kong) — 11th globally (held strong)
  • CUHK (Chinese University of Hong Kong) — 18th globally (up 14 places, a historic top-20 breakthrough)
  • HKUST (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) — 33rd globally (up 11 places)
  • PolyU (Hong Kong Polytechnic University) — 50th globally (up 4 places, first-ever top-50 entry)
  • CityU (City University of Hong Kong) — 52nd globally (up 11 places)

Singapore and China: Consistent Giants

Singapore’s National University of Singapore (NUS) remains the top-ranked Asian university in the world rankings at 10th globally, while Nanyang Technological University (NTU) holds firm at 12th. Both continue to be among the most competitive universities on the planet.

China also continues its upward march. Peking University climbed to 13th globally and Tsinghua University rose three spots to 14th, making the 11–20 band particularly Asia-dominant this year. Shanghai Jiao Tong University ranked 36th, while 13 of the 90 new entrants to the rankings this year came from China.

Japan and South Korea

Japan’s University of Tokyo ranked 39th globally, while South Korea’s Seoul National University came in at 38th and Yonsei University at 42nd. The broader 100–200 bracket also saw notable gains from Japanese institutions.
