Looking for a peaceful yet fascinating outing with the family? Head over to Kowloon Walled City Park, a beautifully landscaped garden built on the site of what was once the most densely populated—and lawless—place on Earth. This serene park offers a unique blend of rich history, traditional Chinese architecture, and lush greenery, making it a perfect spot for exploration, learning, and relaxation.
Originally a Qing Dynasty military outpost, the Kowloon Walled City evolved into a notorious, ungoverned maze of high-rise tenements in the mid-20th century. At its peak in the 1970s, it housed over 30,000 people within just 2.6 hectares, operating without regulation, sanitation, or official oversight. Despite the chaos, it was also a place of community, with families, schools, bakeries, and clinics.
In 1994, the Hong Kong government cleared the site and transformed it into the Kowloon Walled City Park, preserving its history while creating a tranquil space for all to enjoy. (Fun fact: action scenes from Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Bloodsport were filmed here!)
Highlights for Families
STROLL:
Wander along the park’s winding paths, surrounded by lush gardens, koi ponds, and ornamental pavilions. The traditional Chinese landscaping is not only picturesque but also calming. Stop at one of the elegant verandas—perfect for a relaxing break or a family picnic.
LEARN:
Visit the Yamen, the only original structure remaining from the Walled City era. This historic building now houses a small exhibition featuring old photographs, artifacts, and an interactive display that brings the city’s complex past to life. It’s engaging for both adults and curious kids.
BE AMAZED & TAKE PHOTOS:
Don’t miss the bronze model of the Walled City at the South Gate. This detailed replica gives a powerful sense of how tightly packed and labyrinthine the city once was—great for conversation and unforgettable photo ops.
BIKE & PLAY:
Right across from the South Entrance, there’s a bike rental stand offering a variety of kids’ and adult bicycles, including ones with training wheels. The adjacent outdoor bike park is perfect for letting kids ride to their hearts’ content after exploring the gardens. With wide, winding paths that dip and climb, it’s ideal for little thrill-seekers! There’s also an open space for beginners to practice. Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 10:00 am – 8:00 pm | Saturday and Sunday, 9:00 am – midnight. For inquiries, call +852 2382 0618.
KOWLOON WALLED CITY: A CINEMATIC JOURNEY
Don’t miss the ‘Kowloon Walled City: A Cinematic Journey’ exhibition, now open at Kowloon Walled City Park. This free, open-air showcase features over 50 meticulously recreated movie sets from the award-winning film Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. Built on the original site of the Walled City, the life-size sets, immersive projections, and traditional craftsmanship bring the dense and chaotic architecture of this iconic enclave back to life. Perfect for history buffs and film fans alike, it’s a cultural experience not to be missed!
A perfect spot for a family day out – lush gardens and winding cycle paths that are fun for both kids and adults. Just don’t forget the bug spray! Sadly, there’s no playground.
