If you enjoy culture, the arts and keeping traditions alive, then Threads of Life is a must visit during your stay in Ubud! Threads of Life showcases the traditional weaving art of the Indonesian archipelago in the museum and shop. In order to preserve their priceless cultural heritage, Threads of Life has resurrected this thousand year old art and developed women’s cooperatives throughout the islands in order to preserve these ancient methods.
The small gallery displays a gorgeous collection of ikat, batik and songket textiles that celebrate women weavers and sewers, as well as their creativity and communities of local artisans. Over the years, colors and patterns have become synonymous with certain islands, as well as villages showing their own distinctive motif. Ikats are passed down generations, thus becoming family heirlooms. Each weaving village has developed their own secret weaving and dyeing techniques, thus Threads of Life wants to keep these traditions alive by having the older weavers pass their vast knowledge onto the younger generations.
Indonesia’s textiles are perhaps some of the world’s greatest cloth arts…go be amazed, appreciate, and buy!
It is a fair trade business that preserves the country's heritage and empowers disadvantaged weavers. By purchasing a textile or partaking in a class, your small contribution helps alleviate poverty in rural Indonesia and Threads of Life continue in their endeavors.
Textile collectors, art connoisseurs and travelers who wants to take a real piece of Indonesian art home with them, not just a souvenir.
Threads of Life offers a class on the textiles found across Indonesia. The class also focuses on the different weaves of Indonesia and natural dyeing techniques. There is a minimum of four people and the cost is Rp. 75,000 per person.
