If you and the family have ever visited Bangkok, chances are you might have heard of Took Lae Dee – an eatery chain popular for serving up Thai fare at really affordable prices. And now, you won’t have to take a three-hour plane ride over just to get your authentic Thai food fix, because they’ve opened their first outlet right here in Singapore!
Took Lae Dee translates to “cheap and good” in Thai, and they sure live up to their name. Order their bestselling staple dishes like the Pad Krapow (S$3.80) – minced meat drenched in flavor and accompanied with basil leaves for a spicy kick, and the option of topping up an oozying egg for just S$1.20 more. To accompany that, their Tom Yum Soup (S$6.80 or S$8) is also a familiarly satisfying option. While it isn’t overwhelmingly spicy, you might still want to request to turn their spice level down a notch if you’re sharing with the younger ones.
Besides their savory offerings, don’t leave without sampling their sweet treats as well. Who can resist a cold glass of Thai Iced Milk Tea (S$2.80) or a dessert to end off the meal on. Their seasonal Mango Sticky Rice (S$3.80 or S$5) is great for sharing too, but it’s seasonal availability means that you will need to count on your luck to have it.
Took Lae Dee has both indoor and outdoor seating, but with the heat from the weather (and food), you might be better off under air-conditioning, especially if you’re with kids or grandparents. As a heads up – make your way down right before the peak meal hours to avoid a queue!
Bangkok is one of the most common getaway destinations among people in Singapore, and dining here feels like we’re right there in the country!
