Let the lemon-lime dotted lights be your guide! Fireflies in Hong Kong are lighting up the skies. Take the kids out to hike one of Hong Kong’s many trails, just as dusk sets in, to see the luminous glow of the lovebugs all around you. From wee ones to adults, this is an unforgettable memory for all.
- Summer evenings (especially May–June, about 7–9pm) are still the best bet for a big, sparkly display. You can also look in autumn and even mid-winter, but you will usually see different, often fewer, species — and peak glow is still the first 1–2 hours after sunset.

Where to see fireflies in Hong Kong: Best night hikes and walks with kids?
- The Tai Po Kau Nature Trail – Fireflies favor high hills with clean streams, and there are several spots to see these friendly bright lights. The Tai Po Kau Nature Trail, off Tai Po Road, is easy to reach and one of the better places to catch all the action. If you can, take the trip out on a weeknight to steer clear of the crowds. The Red Trail is particularly popular as it offers streams, ponds, and waterfalls too.
- Sha Lo Tung – Head over for fireflies within the Pat Sin Leng Country Park. There are also 2 abandoned Hakka Villages to explore here.
- Tai Mo Shan – The largest mountain in Hong Kong also has the largest firefly (The Elephant Firefly). Try to spot it near the waterfall by the trail by the Youth Hostels Association.
When is the best time to see fireflies in Hong Kong with kids?
Peak season is April to June, especially late April and May, from about 7pm to 9pm just after sunset. Warm, humid nights after rain bring the most glow. Some trails still show fireflies in August and September. Weeknights are quieter than weekends.

- January–February: 4 species, even when nights drop to about 10°C
- Species count then rises through spring
- May–June: peak, 13 species
- July–August (hottest months): drops to 7 species
- September–December: 11 species
Two seasonal “teams”
- Wet season (April–September): mostly Luciolinae (the classic flashing “lovebug” fireflies families go out to see)
- Dry season (October–March): mostly Lampyrinae and Rhagophthalmidae (window fireflies, glow-worms, and winter species such as the Winter Rhagophthalmus)
Where can I take my kids to see fireflies in Hong Kong?
Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve is the most family-friendly spot, with a short Red Trail, streams, and several species. Sha Lo Tung in Pat Sin Leng Country Park has a bigger wetland display after a longer walk. Tai Mo Shan suits older kids hiking near the youth hostel waterfall.
Is Tai Po Kau Nature Trail safe for young children at night?
It works for school-age kids who can walk in low light. The Red Trail takes about an hour and is not stroller-friendly after dark. Hold hands near streams, use a dim torch on the ground only, and stay home if a rainstorm or typhoon warning is out.
What should we bring, and how do we watch fireflies without harming them?
Pack water, mosquito spray, closed shoes, and a dim or red-filtered torch. Keep voices low, skip flash photos, stay on the path, and never catch or touch fireflies. Point light at the ground so larvae are not stepped on. Take all rubbish home.
How do I get to Tai Po Kau for a family firefly walk?
