As Hong Kong Academy (HKA) enters its third decade as a leading international school in Hong Kong, they have just rolled out a new secondary school initiative, X block, which sees HKA students apply their interests and skills in real life contexts.

X block is a daily lesson during which students brainstorm, create and launch initiatives related to global citizenship and personal interests. Projects can be completed individually or in teams and are designed to meet goals they set for themselves, often as part of their Global Citizen Diploma credential.

In Grade 9, one student with a passion for math has been contributing to a doctoral research paper by running statistical analysis under the supervision of an Assistant Professor at Hong Kong University, while two Grade 10 students initiated a Friday night football coaching program for Primary School students that ran over two months.

A group of Grade 11 and 12 students, meanwhile, recently conceived, produced and performed Mindscape, an evening designed to raise awareness and funds in support of the KELY Group, a Hong Kong-based NGO that focuses on mental health and wellbeing. The event, which included live music with an integrated art auction, was attended by 130 guests and raised nearly HK$10,000.

The Global Citizen Diploma is a credential which is only available in Hong Kong at HKA. The program is a requirement for graduation and is earned as students curate a portfolio outlining their unique skills and illustrating how they contribute to society. All students also graduate with the HKA Diploma and the majority earn the IB Diploma as well.
