Beautiful Immersive Family-Friendly Art Experience

This summer, Tai Kwun Contemporary presents the latest installment of its beloved Open the Box family-friendly series, Pleasant Place with Ryan Villamael, running from July 4 to August 2, 2026. Following the success of Bloom of Light (2025) and Home Sweet Home (2024), this third edition continues the interactive tradition by inviting visitors to co-create art while exploring the themes of memory, belonging, and connection.

What Makes Pleasant Place Special?

Filipino artist Ryan Villamael brings his Locus Amoenus series to Tai Kwun, transforming the space into a dreamlike landscape exploring memory, history, and belonging. Known for his intricate paper sculptures, Villamael’s works have been featured at prestigious venues like Palais de Tokyo (Paris) and the Singapore Biennale.

From July 4–26, visitors can co-create a growing paper canopy of leaves and vines reflecting shared stories, or simply wander through the immersive installation as it evolves.

  • Free Public Viewing (July 4–August 2): Stroll through the immersive gallery at no cost. and keep coming back to see how the artwork transforms over time as participants add to the installation.
  • Co-Create Your Own Art (Ticketed Admission)
    • Purchase a HK$90 ticket to receive a material pack and enjoy a 90-minute crafting session.
    • Contribute your own creations—leaves, vines, or abstract designs—to the paper canopy in the main gallery.
    • Perfect for families, this fun and calming activity is suitable for kids aged 5 and above, with younger children (aged 12 or below) requiring a parent or guardian.
    • Don’t worry if you’re not crafty—there are helpful staff, instructions, and instructional videos to guide you through the process, making it enjoyable for everyone.
  • Calm Indoor Activity: A relaxing and creative space to unwind while connecting with others through art.
  • Closing Ceremony (Free) (August 2, 2026): Celebrate the final form of this collaborative masterpiece at a special closing event from 4 PM–7 PM.
