Starting in 2026, the Japanese government is implementing several fee increases that could impact your travel budget. These changes include:

2. Higher Airport Departure Tax: Known as the “sayonara tax,” the international departure tax is currently set at JPY 1,000 (about USD 6.60). This fee will also increase, reflecting similar costs in other countries.
3. New Pre-Entry Screening Charge: Beginning in 2028, a new system called the Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorization (JESTA) will require travelers from visa-exempt countries to undergo a pre-arrival screening process for a fee expected to be around US$40 (about S$51.90).
