Tired of the same weekend routine? Switch things up with exciting family challenges – a series of unforgettable adventures designed to bring the family closer. From indoor activities to outdoor expeditions, each challenge goes beyond your typical outings, encouraging creativity, teamwork and a spirit for adventure. Plus, you’ll also get to explore new places, learn together and strengthen family bonds while making incredible memories!
Families who enjoy feasting together, this challenge is right up your alley! Start by listing down local favourites like putu piring, kaya toast, muah chee, or chwee kueh - whatever you'd like - and try one new snack per hour. Along the way, rank your favourites and see how similar or different your rankings are compared to other family members! If you prefer, the challenge can also be split into two separate days (5 snacks on Saturday and 5 on Sunday), making it way more manageable for young kids.
The Alphabet Adventure Game is a creative way for families to spend the weekend! You can come up with a list of 26 activities corresponding to each letter of the alphabet, and as a family work through the list together! It can even span across multiple weekends, providing you with exciting activities to look forward to towards the end of the week. For example, for the letter "A", you can all sign up for an archery class, and for the letter "B", perhaps the family can take a short trip to the beach! It'd also be fun to include the kids in the planning process and ask them about their desired activities for each letter.
Getting the kids interested in reading can sometimes be a chore, but it might be more enticing when you turn reading into a fun activity! Why not have the family explore Singapore's best literary spots by setting the goal of visiting 5 libraries and bookstores, allowing the little ones to pick out a book or two they'd like to borrow or purchase along the way. You can even conclude the day's activity by having a reading party together, where everyone sits in a cozy corner at home to read their new books.
Here's an activity that heavily relies on teamwork! Create a family music video from scratch over the two-day weekend, starting from picking a song together and planning out the concept. Remember to also note down your filming locations, outfits, and individual roles in the video before you get down to filming. Shoot multiple angles for variety while including dance routines, funny faces and slow-motion scenes for dramatic flair! Mom or dad can edit the video before gathering the family in the living room for the grand reveal - and everyone can have a good laugh while watching the end product!
In today's world, we're constantly glued to our devices, and the 12 Hours Without Screens challenge is a fun way for families to unplug and rediscover the joys of real-world interactions. How do you do it? Set the rule that no one is allowed to use their phones, tablets, laptops or turn on the TV - except for emergencies, of course. Then, engage in activities that require analog tools such as board games, outdoor hikes, or even doing DIY crafts. It'll also be fun to document the day with analog equipment such as disposable film cameras!
You don't have to spend big to have fun as a family, and challenging yourselves to keep to a SG$50 budget for the entire weekend is a creative way to make memories without breaking the bank! It also in turn teaches the kids not to overspend unnecessarily while learning tips on stretching their budget. Free activities (link below for inspiration) are encouraged, and mealtime can include a picnic in the park with food brought from home. Having the family take public transport, walk, or cycle over the weekend also helps keep the activities within budget.
Families who love a little friendly competition, why not have a mini cook-off over the weekend? Split the family into two different teams, each one in charge of a particular dish. Spend Saturday coming up with a grocery list together for your dish before heading to the supermarket to buy whatever you need. Then, prepare the food on Sunday while inviting extended family or friends over to try the meal. Have them score both teams and declare a winner after! The friendly competition not only makes the weekend more exciting, it also teaches kids a little bit more about cooking and gets them curious about different types of food.
Spread joy and positivity as a family with 10 random acts of kindness over the weekend. It not only makes someone's day brighter but also allows bonding as a family through small, meaningful gestures. You don't even need to complete all 10 within the weekend, and can set a different timeframe if you prefer. These acts of kindness can be as simple as leaving a surprise encouraging note for someone clasped in a library book, helping someone carry their grocery bags, or even surprising a friend or family member.
Get active with the family by completing 10 different sports activities over the month! Choose one month where you'll commit to sporting classes or activities every weekend, and do them together as a family until you try out 10 different sports! These can include learning a new skill like roller skating, or even trying out stand up paddling. You can make it a friendly competition by keeping score and setting mini goals for each sporting experience. Other sports-related ideas include swimming relay races, basketball free throw contests, and rock climbing challenges.
Explore Singapore's green spaces by spending your weekend doing a 5-park marathon challenge. This easily combines fitness, nature and family bonding into a single action-packed weekend. First, choose five parks in Singapore that members of the family would like to visit, then set mini games or goals to be completed at each park. For example, if the family has chosen to visit Botanic Gardens, everyone can be tasked to take pictures of at least 5 plant or animal species at the park.
