Offering stunning views of an abandoned quarry site dating back to the late 80s, Bukit Batok Nature Park exudes tranquility and is a perfect place to explore with the kids or wind down the day with a leisurely stroll. More commonly known as Xiao Guilin or Little Guilin, the park spans across 36 hectares and is also home to varied species of birds and even reptiles; macaque monkeys are a common sight too. Start your adventure at the entry point of Bukit Batok East Ave 2 where you will see a red-and-white transmission tower on the horizon, marking the top of the hill where the quarry can be found. Along the way, you’ll be greeted to a fitness area and voilah, children’s playground! The playground is simple enough with a tower structure fitted with a slide and climbing frames. You can bring some sand toys to extend play time before strolling along the path towards the quarry.
Want more? Take on the Forest Track and follow signs pointing to Lookout Points 1 and 2. Take a step back into history right at the top of the hill, which is a former World War Two site. During the Battle of Singapore, this area within the Bukit Timah region saw heavy fighting between the Japanese and Allied forces. This hill was significant as the Japanese Army had their headquarters at the nearby Ford Motor Company Factory. The Japanese had built a shrine to honor their dead at the top of the hill but was destroyed by them after their surrender to prevent it from being desecrated by the returning Allies. What remains at the site today is a bronze marker at the foot of the 120 stairs leading to the red-and-white transmission tower which was where the shrine stood.
Tranquil views of a former quarry site, playground, wildlife, plus a step back into history, this park has all that you need for a day of adventure with the kids.
Everyone especially history buffs and nature lovers.
