Examining Artefacts

Together you and your child will use a variety of archaeological tools to sweep, dig and unearth strategically buried “artefacts”. You will then examine form and function to develop a story about your discovery. CIS’s Experiential Learning coordinator, Christa Craats, will be on hand to guide you through the dig and help you discover how your artefacts have impacted civilization over time.

An Engaging Approach

CIS’ Experiential Learning Coordinator, Christa, says: “This approach is actively engaging and supports a deep dive into topics. Our activity is based on what our grade 1's do within the curriculum. They will study the form and function of the artefacts as tools and technologies. Using a timeline constructed of string, students work to create a chronological order of the artefacts based on what they’re made of, and how they functioned. This helps children think critically about how these artefacts have impacted people over time."

Leaders In Experiential Learning

CIS has developed its expertise and leadership in experiential learning over the last 20 years and has many firsts. CIS was the first school in Singapore to introduce Open Minds, a program that sees children learning in real-world settings for an extended period of time. It was also the first school to open an Outdoor Discovery Centre affectionately known as the ODC, and the first school in Singapore to introduce the STEAM approach.
