Untitled_design_-_2019-08-16T143725

Whether you’re after a quick no-flight border run, a beach reset in Vietnam or Hainan, or a proper city break in Taipei or Bangkok, Hong Kong’s location makes weekend travel simple. Most of Asia is within a five-hour flight. Some spots need no flight at all. There’s enough variety here to cover no-flight hops, beach trips, city breaks, and scenery escapes. All are doable in a two- or three-day weekend.

Little Steps’ Favorite Easy Weekend Getaways From Hong Kong

  • Taipei – under 2 hours, night markets, hot springs, easy transit.
  • Macau – ferry or drive, no flight needed. Casinos, colonial architecture, food.
  • Shenzhen – across the border, quick and cheap. Shopping, tech malls.
  • Guangzhou – 1 hour or high-speed rail, more traditional Chinese city vibe.
  • Bangkok – around 3 hours, street food, temples, nightlife.
  • Hanoi – roughly 2.5 hours, Old Quarter, lake, cheap eats.
  • Da Nang / Hoi An – direct flight to Da Nang, then short transfer to Hoi An’s lantern-lit old town.
  • Manila or Cebu – around 2 hours, easy beach or city options in the Philippines.
  • Guilin – 1.5 hours, karst mountains, Li River cruise.
  • Sanya – around 2 hours, Hainan Island beaches without needing Thailand-level flight time.

At Little Steps, we’ve personally visited and reviewed each of these destinations and heard from hundreds of other Hong Kong travelers in our community. This guide is fully refreshed for 2026 with the latest on flight times, new hotel openings, and real traveler feedback. We focus on what matters to families, such as flight length, ease of getting from the airport, and what each destination is good for, whether it’s beach, scenery, food, or culture.

Weekend getaway reviews by Little Steps

Want more destination ideas from Little Steps?

Here are practical answers to some frequently asked questions:

What’s the closest weekend getaway from Hong Kong that doesn’t need a flight?
Macau is under an hour by ferry, making it the easiest option for a one-night or day trip. Shenzhen and Guangzhou are reachable by high-speed rail in under an hour and a half, with no check-in or security queues. They are good choices if you want to maximize time on the ground and skip the airport altogether.

Which destination is best for a beach weekend from Hong Kong?
Sanya on Hainan Island is the closest proper beach destination at around 2 hours, with direct flights and good resort options. Da Nang and Cebu take slightly longer but are still under 3 hours. They generally offer better value for beachfront resorts and villas than Sanya at the same price point.

What’s the best short flight for a food-focused weekend?
Bangkok and Hanoi are both under 3 hours and well suited to a food-led trip, with street food, markets, and a strong restaurant scene. Taipei is the shortest flight of the three and the better pick if night markets are the main draw. It’s easy to cover most of the major ones in a single weekend.

Is Guilin worth a weekend trip from Hong Kong?
Yes. At 1.5 hours, it’s one of the shortest flights on this list. The karst mountain scenery is a genuine change from the city breaks and beach trips elsewhere. It works well if you want something scenic without committing a full long weekend to get there and back.

When’s the best time to book these trips?
November to April avoids the worst of the heat and rain across most of these destinations. Taipei and Bangkok fill up fast on weekends, so book those at least three to four weeks out. The others have more flexibility closer to the date.

  • TAIPEI - Central Base Near Taipei 101, In The Xinyi District

Night Markets, Hot Springs And A Flight Under 2 Hours

Taipei is under 2 hours from Hong Kong, with an easy MRT system and a good mix of city, food, and nature. Xinyi District is the main hub. It is home to Taipei 101, several malls, and the city's main shopping and dining area. Shilin and Raohe Street night markets are best known for food. Shilin is larger and more touristy, while Raohe is smaller and more local. Ximending is another option. It is a pedestrian area popular with teenagers, with shops, arcades, and cheap eats.

Beitou, 30 minutes north by MRT, has public and private hot springs, some with outdoor family pools. The area also has a hot spring museum, useful for younger kids who can't use the springs. Elephant Mountain (Xiangshan) is a short hike with skyline views over Taipei 101, suitable for older kids. Da'an Forest Park is central, with open space and a playground. It is good for a break between sightseeing.

Why Little Steps Loves It: Short flight, low jet lag, perfect for a 2-night weekend. Clean, safe, and easy to get around by public transport. Din Tai Fung, night market food, Taipei 101, and Beitou hot springs are all reachable without a car.

Who It's Perfect For: Families with kids of any age. Older kids enjoy the night markets, the Taipei 101 deck, and the Elephant Mountain hike; younger kids do well with hot springs and shorter transit times between sights.

Flights: Direct, under 2 hours, multiple daily options on full-service and budget carriers.

Hotel Recommendation: Grand Hyatt Taipei is central and close to Taipei 101, with family rooms that fit 2 adults and 2 kids. Walking distance to Din Tai Fung and easy MRT access to the night markets and Beitou.

Anything Else: Pack layers for outside in summer since Taipei is cooler than other destinations on this list, especially at night. Plan a half-day for Beitou if traveling with kids aged 5 or older.

  • Macau Top 10 Easy Weekend Getaways From Hong Kong Little Steps Asia

MACAU - No Flight Needed, Ferry Or Drive

    Casinos, Colonial Architecture And Food

Macau is less than an hour by ferry or car, so no airport is needed when traveling from Hong Kong. The Historic Centre is walkable and features colonial architecture, old churches, and cobbled squares, including the Ruins of St. Paul's. The Cotai Strip has large resorts with casinos, malls, and water parks, several within walking distance.

Taipa Village has smaller streets with local food stalls, ideal for an afternoon and a great spot for Portuguese egg tarts and local snacks. A-Ma Temple, near the ferry terminal, is one of the oldest in Macau and an easy stop if short on time. Senado Square, with its wave-patterned tiles, connects most Historic Centre sights and is a good central starting point for walking.

Why Little Steps Loves It: No flight or check-in, making it ideal for a 1 or 2-night trip. Cotai resorts have water parks and family activities inside the hotel, so you do not need to plan much outside. Portuguese egg tarts and local food stalls in Taipa are an easy addition for older kids.

Who It's Perfect For: Families with kids of any age. Younger kids enjoy the resort water parks; older kids can manage walking around the Historic Centre and Taipa.

Getting There: The ferry from Hong Kong takes about 1 hour. Driving via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge takes a similar time.

Hotel Recommendation: Grand Hyatt Macau at City of Dreams has direct access to Studio City water park, plus family rooms and kids' activities on site.

Anything Else: Cotai resorts run free shuttle buses between hotels, so no taxi is needed. Book water park slots in advance for peak weekends.

Getting There: Take the MTR to the border, then a short walk or train into central Shenzhen. It takes under 30 minutes from Lo Wu or Futian checkpoints.

Hotel Recommendation: Four Seasons Hotel Shenzhen is central and near shopping, with family rooms and a good pool for downtime between mall visits.

Anything Else: Bring passports for both directions. The border gets busy on weekends and public holidays, so cross early if you go for the day.

  • Guilin Top 10 Easy Weekend Getaways From Hong Kong Little Steps Asia

GUILIN - 1.5 Hours By Air

Karst Mountains And Li River Cruise

Guilin is about 1.5 hours by air, one of the shortest flights on this list. The Li River cruise runs between Guilin and Yangshuo, passing karst peaks, farmland, and small villages. It usually takes 4 to 5 hours downstream. Reed Flute Cave has lit-up limestone formations and is a good indoor option if the weather changes.

Yangshuo is smaller and quieter than Guilin, with cycling routes through the countryside and a night market along West Street. Yulong River, near Yangshuo, is a quieter alternative to the main Li River cruise, with bamboo raft rides through farmland.

Why Little Steps Loves It: Short flight, scenery you don't get from beach or city trips on this list. The river cruise works well with kids since most of the day is spent sitting watching the scenery pass. Yangshuo is a good add-on if you have 3 nights instead of 2.
