Apps To Help Stop Spam Calls And WhatsApp Scams In Hong Kong
Plus The WhatsApp Settings To Fix Tonight
You know the routine. You’re doing the school run, the phone buzzes with a 281x loan offer. You’re mid-bath-time and someone’s “calling about your insurance policy.” Then the one that actually costs money: a message from a friend’s WhatsApp asking you to send an FPS transfer, urgently, please don’t tell anyone.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: a call-blocking app handles the first two. It does nothing for the third — and the third is where Hong Kong families are losing real money. Police handled 1,993 WhatsApp hijacking cases between January and July this year, up roughly 170%, with HK$146.3 million lost. One victim lost HK$12.2 million. In another case, a businessman transferred over HK$10 million after receiving a deepfaked voice note that sounded exactly like his father.
So we’ve built a four-layer setup. It takes about ten minutes, most of it is free, and it’s worth doing on your phone, your kids’ phones, your helper’s phone, and your parents’ phones.

How do I stop spam calls in Hong Kong?
Turn on Silence Unknown Callers or Android spam filters, add one local blocker, and use Scameter+ to check numbers before you call back. Save school and clinic contacts first so real calls still get through. Full steps are in this spam calls and WhatsApp scams guide.
What is Scameter+ and is it safe?
Scameter+ is the free Hong Kong Police app. Paste a phone number, link, email, FPS ID, or bank account to see if it is linked to known scams. Download it only from the App Store, Google Play, or cyberdefender.hk. Fake copies exist.
Which call blocker app works best here?
Use one app only. Call Defender has a strong local list. Jima is light for iPhone. Whoscall helps if you travel in Asia. Deny Contacts access and never install a blocker from a message link.
How do I stop WhatsApp hijacking scams?
Turn on two-step verification, check Linked devices, and set Groups to My Contacts. WhatsApp will never SMS you about a ban, fine, or security centre. Never share a verification code, even if the voice sounds like family.
What should I do if a family WhatsApp asks for money?
Stop and call them on a number you already have. Do not reply in the chat or send FPS. Check the number in Scameter+ and call 18222 if it looks like a scam. Do the same setup on kids’, helpers’, and grandparents’ phones.

Protect Yourself Against Online Scams In Hong KongThis is the Hong Kong Police app, and it's the single most useful thing on this list.
Paste in a phone number, a website link, an email address, an FPS ID, or a bank account number, and it tells you instantly whether it's linked to known scams. There's also Call Alert and Website Detection, which check incoming calls and websites automatically against the police database in real time.
Use it as a habit, not an emergency tool. Before you pay a Facebook Marketplace seller. Before you click a "delivery failed" link. Before you transfer to an unfamiliar FPS ID.

- ⚠️ Scammers have built fake versions. There is no standalone Scameter website — only the official app stores and cyberdefender.hk.
What it won't do: stop a legitimate-but-annoying insurance cold call. That's the next two layers.

Layer 2: Turn On Your Phone's Built-In Filters
Free, No App NeededMost people never touch these. They're genuinely effective.
iPhone
- Settings → Apps → Phone → Silence Unknown Callers
- Settings → Apps → Phone → Call Screening (newer iOS versions — unknown callers state their business before your phone rings)
- Settings → Apps → Messages → Filter Unknown Senders
Android
- Google Phone app → tap your profile → Settings → Caller ID & spam → Filter spam calls
- Samsung: Phone → Settings → Caller ID and spam protection
- Google Messages → Settings → Spam protection
Your carrier
CSL, 3, CMHK and SmarTone all offer nuisance-call filtering as an add-on. Ring them or check your account portal. Several run enhanced or free filtering for customers aged 60+ — worth asking about specifically when you're setting up a grandparent's phone. -
Layer 3: Add One Local Call-Blocker App
The Best Spam Apps To InstallEmphasis on one. Two blockers competing for caller-ID access on the same phone means missed calls, wrong labels and a flat battery by 4pm.
Why local matters: global apps have never heard of the small Hong Kong numbers that plague us — 281x finance calls, "白撞" cold-callers, beauty-salon promos. Apps drawing on the HKJunkCall community database recognise them immediately.
OFCA lists three commonly used filtering apps for Hong Kong: Call Defender, Whoscall and Jima Caller ID.

- App Store or Google Play only — never a link in a message
- Deny the Contacts permission. Blocking spam does not require your address book
- Report junk numbers inside the app. That's how these community lists stay sharp
- OFCA is clear that these lists are crowdsourced public reports, not an official register. Expect the odd mislabel
The combinations we'd actually recommend:
- iPhone: Silence Unknown Callers + Jima or Call Defender
- Android: Google/Samsung spam filter + Call Defender

Layer 4: Lock Down WhatsApp
This Is the Gap Nearly Everyone Leaves OpenNo call blocker on earth protects you here, because the message arrives from a number you know and trust.
Police say the pattern is almost always the same: a phishing message impersonating WhatsApp's "official service centre", warning that your account will be suspended or banned. Or a fake WhatsApp site pushed to the top of Google results through search-engine poisoning. You enter your number, and the verification code — and your account is gone. Then your entire contact list starts receiving money requests from "you."
Do these three things right now:
- WhatsApp → Settings → Account → Two-step verification. Set a six-digit PIN you'll actually remember. This is the big one.
- WhatsApp → Settings → Linked devices. Log out anything you don't recognise. Diarise it monthly.
- Settings → Privacy → Groups → My Contacts. Stops strangers adding you to scam groups.
And burn these into your memory:
- WhatsApp will never SMS you to say your account is closing, that you've been fined, or that you must scan a QR code or visit a "security centre"
- Real WhatsApp support will never phone you from a +852 mobile number
- Never share a verification code. Not with anyone. Not even someone who sounds exactly like family

Small Settings That Kill Most of the Noise
Practical Tips To Protect Yourself & Your Family- Silence numbers not in your contacts. You'll occasionally miss the school or the clinic — so save those numbers now, before you switch it on
- Block "No Caller ID" if you don't need hidden-number calls
- Don't answer and hang up "just to see who it is." That confirms a live human on the line and gets you called more
- Report junk numbers in your blocker app — it improves the list for every other family in Hong Kong
- Keep iOS and Android updated. AI has made cloning a fake WhatsApp login page almost free. Patches still matter
