Bring on the bloggers! In this new series, Little Steps is connecting with Asia’s leading mom and dad bloggers to find out more about their families, their blogs, and of course, their favorite outings, restaurants, and more! We are very excited to say hello to Hong Kong-based Helen Scott from Mango Menus! This up and coming blog offers parents in the city all things food-related including fab recipes for kids, menu planning, budget-friendly shopping, and much more.
I have long been passionate about food, cooking, entertaining, writing and always harbored a strange obsession for food photography and styling! I love to nourish my children with healthy food but when I moved to HK 4 years ago, I was staggered by the price of groceries. I seemed to spend all my days hunting down gems of suppliers and trying to adapt my Western recipes to the Asian ingredients around me. Then I would tell all my friends about my discoveries who in turn told me to start a blog!
Around 75% of my readers are from HK, because alongside my recipes, I give advice on where to source ingredients as well as special deals which I work hard to negotiate exclusively for Mango Menus. The kids' recipes and healthy snacks appeal to parents worldwide. We also have a menu planning service where we have designed packed lunch plans and family meal plans for fussy eaters or those with intolerances & allergies.
The Secret Squirrel is one of my favorites. She is an Aussie girl living in Dubai who makes vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free creations (far healthier than me!). She is incredibly creative with it and has inspiring photography.
The kids adore getting the sampan across to Jumbo Floating restaurant, and running around the "seafood exhibition" (lots of fish in tanks at the back of the restaurant on ground floor). Their next favorite pastime is to continually push the lazy susan round the table while rice and noodles fly everywhere!
Ap Lei Chau Park is a great way to spend a couple of hours with the kids. I often take them to the library to choose some books, read a few on a bench overlooking the harbour, have a run around the playground, watch the doggies in their playground, say hello to the frogs in the wet market then take a sampan for a little ride, sometimes to Jumbo for dinner.
We love to take a junk to Po Toi for lunch at the weekend, scooter round the Peak or have a BBQ on Shek-O Beach while the kids build sandcastles.
"Pick your battles" and "always be there when they need you".
