This year, Earth Day falls on Monday 22 April 2024. It is an annual and global event, done to demonstrate support for environmental protection worldwide. The theme for this year’s Earth Day is “Planet vs Plastics” and the Earth Day organization is unwavering in its commitment to ending plastics for the sake of human and planetary health, demanding a 60% reduction in the production of all plastics by 2040. There are many ways to show support on Earth Day and throughout the year, whether it is to buy clothes sustainably (the fashion industry is responsible for 8% of greenhouse emissions!), go on a family hike, participate in a cleanup nearby, recycle, get educated about Hong Kong’s soon to be rolled-out waste charging scheme or even make your kids more climate and environmentally literate with our guide to practices for raising environmentally conscious kids in Hong Kong. In response to the strong calls to reduce, reuse, and recycle in Hong Kong, the 'ReThink Plastic' initiative, a partnership between HandsOn Hong Kong and V Cycle, is making significant strides. Starting in early 2022, it was revealed that hotel quarantine guests in Hong Kong alone used and disposed of over 100 million plastic items. Projections suggest that by 2030, Hong Kong could be sending 4.2 billion single-use takeaway containers to landfill annually. To combat this, 'ReThink Plastic' engages the community, especially encouraging volunteers to participate in the recycling process at the V Cycle factory. After a 45-minute briefing and tour, volunteers, including the elderly employed by V Cycle, assist in the factory's recycling operations. This initiative not only helps reduce plastic waste but also provides dignified work for elderly cardboard collectors. The program is open to volunteers aged 6 and above, with children between 6-12 required to be accompanied by a guardian.
