Family Guide to Similan Islands Thailand: Phuket Transfers, Beaches & Kid Snorkeling

Crystal-Clear Snorkeling & Paradise Beaches for Families in the Andaman Sea

Image of Similan Island

The Similan Islands (part of Mu Ko Similan National Park off Phang Nga Province) are a dream family escape — think powdery white sand, turquoise waters teeming with colorful fish, and gentle snorkeling spots perfect for little adventurers. Located about 70km offshore, these nine (plus two) islands offer some of Thailand’s best marine life, making them ideal for families based in Khao Lak or Phuket. Day trips are the most popular option, but families with older kids may love a liveaboard for more relaxed exploration.

  • Shea Stanley and her family visited the Similan Islands as a day trip from Phuket.  It was a full day, and the speedboat trip is long for young kids, but it is totally worth it.  Most family-friendly tours include round-trip air-conditioned minibus pickup from your Phuket hotel (Patong, Kata, Karon, etc.) starting around 5:30–7:00 AM. The drive to Thap Lamu Pier takes about 1.5–2 hours. From there, a speedboat (75–90 minutes) or a more stable catamaran (90–120 minutes) reaches the islands. Total travel time: 10–14 hours round trip, returning to your hotel by 7:00–8:30 PM. Catamaran options suit families better — smoother ride, less seasickness, and more space for kids.  If you are staying in Khao Lak – travel time is much shorter.

Little Steps Insider Tips:

  • Motion sickness meds (like Dramamine) are a must for the boat ride, especially with younger kids.
  • Opt for smaller or premium tours for less crowding and more beach time. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, hats, rash guards, reusable water bottles, and snacks.
  • Older kids adore the short hikes to viewpoints like Sail Rock.
  • National Park fee: THB 500/adult, THB 250/child and are included in tours. No overnight stays on the islands themselves (liveaboards only).

Is the Similan Islands a good day trip with kids in Thailand?

Yes, the Similan Islands make a fantastic family day trip from Khao Lak or Phuket, especially for kids aged 5 and up. Expect soft white sands, calm shallow snorkel spots, and vibrant fish. Tours include lunch, life jackets, and transfers. Choose calm-sea days and family-friendly operators for the best experience.

At what age is it best to visit the Similan Islands with children?

Kids 5 years and older enjoy it most as they can snorkel and explore beaches. Younger toddlers can join but may find the long boat ride tiring—bring their own life jacket and snacks. Many families with school-age children report magical memories of spotting turtles and coral.

How do you get to the Similan Islands with kids from Phuket or Khao Lak?

Most families depart from Thap Lamu Pier near Khao Lak (about 1.5–2 hours by speedboat). Book all-inclusive day tours that handle transfers. From Phuket, it’s longer, so Khao Lak is easier with little ones. Check Little Steps Asia Thailand guides for family tips.

Is snorkeling in the Similan Islands safe and fun for kids?

Yes—shallow reefs near beaches suit beginners and kids. Wear reef-safe sunscreen, bring child-sized masks, and stay in supervised areas. Many tours have guides pointing out clownfish and turtles. It’s a highlight for families exploring Thailand’s Andaman Sea.

When is the best time to visit Similan Islands with family?

December to April offers calm seas and dry weather, perfect for kids. The islands close mid-May to mid-October for conservation. Book early-morning tours to avoid rough afternoon waves and give everyone time to relax on the beach.
