Planning family holidays can sometimes feel like a full-time job. You dive into the research and spend hours on ChatGPT, only to discover the “hidden gems” it suggested don’t actually exist—all while dodging the children’s latest ideas and keeping a nervous eye on those ever-climbing flight prices.
With long-haul travel becoming increasingly complicated and pricey, Thailand remains one of our favourite destinations for a simple, joyful family holiday in Asia. The only real challenge is knowing exactly where to go to dodge the crowds and catch the best of the sunshine—so we’ve done the hard work for you.
This Weather-Smart Family Planner for 2026/2027 matches the academic calendar with Thailand’s climate “sweet spots” so you make the most of the school holidays.

While other parts of the country face the monsoon in July and August, Koh Samui and its
neighbours stay significantly drier and sunnier, with calm, turquoise seas that are perfect for
little ones. There are still showers in July and August, but they’re mostly short and sharp as
opposed to the monsoon downpours you get on the west coast at that time. There are direct
flights into Koh Samui from all over Asia, and it’s easy to explore the other islands using the
high-speed ferries.
GULF COAST FAMILY-FRIENDLY FAVORITES:
When to visit? Best July–September for Gulf weather, but it’s great year-round.
Koh Samui With Kids: Koh Samui is the ultimate easy trip for powder-white Thai beaches, gentle waters, and world-class resorts with phenomenal kids’ clubs. This is our favourite island for families with babies and toddlers since everything is set up for families.
Koh Phangan With Kids: If you’re up for more of an adventure, the high-speed catamaran gets you to Koh Phangan in around 30 minutes. This island is famous for its laid-back “hippie-chic” vibes; think world-class yoga studios, healthy cafes, and even great co-working spaces for the parents. While the island is generally peaceful in summer, plan your trip to side-step the Full Moon Party.
Koh Tao With Kids: Continue your journey to Koh Tao, a nature-lover’s paradise that feels a world away from the bustle. This laid-back island is famously one of the best spots in the world to learn to dive. The waters are exceptionally calm, and many specialist dive shops now offer “Bubblemaker.” PADI courses tailored specifically for children aged 8 and up.

Align the Christmas school break with Phuket’s peak dry season. Spend 3–4 nights in Phuket,
enjoying the vibrant markets, world-class restaurants, and family-friendly beach clubs that
pull out all the stops for Christmas. Then hop on a quick speedboat (30–45 minutes) to Koh
Yao Yai for pure chilled-out bliss. This low-fare multi-destination combo delivers the best of
both worlds.
ANDAMAN COAST FAMILY-FRIENDLY FAVORITES:
When to visit? Peak dry season Nov–April.
Koh Yao Yai With Kids: West coast beaches (for those famous Andaman sunsets). Daily boat transfers from Phuket to Koh Yao Yai from Bang Rong Pier (about a 20-minute drive from the airport – most resorts offer full transfers).
What area is best for families in Koh Yao Yai? Search properties directly or book packages via Klook.

February’s CNY break lines up beautifully with the Andaman Coast’s sunny, low-rain period. Krabi’s dramatic cliffs and Khao Lak’s relaxed beaches deliver an awesome mix of beach time, cave exploration, boat trips, and bamboo rafting. The extra drive from the airport keeps it quieter than Phuket (around 90-minutes to Khao Lak and 2 hours to Krabi).
This laid-back beach paradise feels like "old-school" Thailand—greener, more spacious, and decidedly family-focused. The entire area is stunning so choose your destination based on your favourite hotel and then explore the area through day trips. Don’t miss a boat trip to the Similan Islands - a cluster of pristine paradise islands often called the "Maldives of Thailand.”
KRABI AND KHAO LAK FAMILY-FRIENDLY FAVORITES:
When to visit? Ideal Dec–April for dry, sunny days.
Krabi With Kids:
What area is best for families in Krabi? Ao Nang (convenient access to beaches, restaurants & boat trips) or Klong Muang (quieter, calm swimming beach).

Stretch that April break with a Bangkok-to-Chiang Mai combo. Bangkok delivers iconic temples, river boat rides, and buzzing markets, while Chiang Mai offers ethical elephant sanctuaries, cooking classes, kid-friendly temples, and cooler mountain air. Check out our Top Chiang Mai Family Adventures article for a deeper dive into the area.
