The National Museum of Singapore marks its 138th anniversary with a month of fun, creativity, and connection. Families can look forward to the launch of A Whale of a Tale, a Magical Bridge Design — Singapore’s first intergenerational playground at a museum — alongside a lively one-day anniversary carnival and a whimsical Stamp Rally trail inspired by the museum’s beloved William Farquhar Collection of Natural History Drawings.
Themed around play across generations, the celebrations blend heritage, storytelling, and inclusive design, turning the museum’s Front Lawn into a vibrant space for all ages to explore.
In a first for Singapore, the National Museum’s new playground invites visitors of all ages and abilities to come together in play. Designed by Magical Bridge Foundation and sponsored by Amanda Toh-Steckler and the late Vince Steckler, this inclusive playground reimagines the museum’s iconic blue whale skeleton once displayed from the early 1900s to the 1970s.
Set against the museum’s heritage façade, the playground’s whalebone-inspired centrepiece is partially decorated with mosaic tiles reminiscent of Singapore’s vintage playgrounds — a nostalgic nod that connects the past with the present. The result? A magical, accessible space that celebrates history through joy, imagination, and movement.
The playground includes:
Sensory play features like percussion instruments and hideaway huts for quiet reflection.
Senior-friendly workout zones and gentle balance beams for active ageing.
Social seating and shaded swings for families to rest and reconnect.
A heartwarming Kindness Corner — a Magical Bridge signature — encouraging thoughtfulness and inclusivity.
A children’s flipbook sharing the story of the whale skeleton and sparking intergenerational storytelling.
Together, these features reflect the museum’s vision to be a social space for everyone — a place where history, nature, and play meet.
We love how the National Museum of Singapore turns its anniversary into a celebration of play, heritage, and inclusion! The new playground doesn’t just look stunning — it embodies community, connection, and creativity.
From the nostalgic mosaics to the interactive sensory zones, every detail inspires joy while teaching kids about Singapore’s past in fun, meaningful ways.
This playground and celebration are perfect for families with children of all ages, grandparents, and caregivers. It’s an inclusive haven where everyone — toddlers, teens, parents, and seniors — can join in.
Whether you’re swinging under the shade, exploring the Stamp Rally trail, or sharing stories from the museum’s past, this event is a beautiful way to bond across generations.
Aside from the playground launch, families can look forward to:
A special anniversary carnival filled with games, music, and community fun.
A Stamp Rally trail reimagining the museum’s animal drawings with a whimsical twist.
The chance to explore Reunion, the museum’s senior-friendly community space.
Hands-on experiences from the annual Get Curious programme, celebrating family learning through art and storytelling.
It’s a wonderful reminder that the National Museum isn’t just about exhibitions — it’s about creating new memories through inclusive, multi-generational experiences.
