Playtime Malvern Hong Kong

Malvern College Pre-School (MCPS) uses the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) as the framework for its early education programme, with play forming a central part of learning. Its Reggio Emilia-inspired campus includes open-plan, light-filled learning areas designed to encourage child-led exploration and independence.

Children also take part in a dual-language immersion programme, with English and Mandarin incorporated into daily activities and collaborative projects. • Reggio Emilia-Inspired Environment: The campus features open-plan, light-filled learning areas designed to act as a “third teacher”, encouraging child-led exploration, collaboration and independence.
  • English and Mandarin: Children take part in a dual-language immersion programme, with English and Mandarin incorporated into daily activities and collaborative projects.
  • Play-Based Learning: Educationally harnessed play gives children opportunities to explore, investigate and develop foundational skills through hands-on experiences.
  • Building Adaptability: MCPS focuses on developing curiosity, resilience, confidence and cognitive flexibility, with the aim of giving children skills that remain useful as they grow and encounter new situations.

What is MCPS?

Malvern College Pre-School Hong Kong offers a world-leading Early Years educational programme featuring creativity, academic learning, sport and outdoor activities. Seeking to encourage each child’s core values – curiosity, kindness, resilience, independence, integrity and humility – it focuses on preparing children for a smooth transition into full-time primary education.

How many campuses are there in Hong Kong and where are they?

MCPS has two campuses: one at Coronation Circle in West Kowloon and another, Island West, on Connaught Road West in Sai Ying Pun.

Who are Malvern Schools and what do they stand for?

Drawing on more than 160 years of heritage from Malvern College UK, Malvern College Pre-School Hong Kong is a member of a growing network of Malvern schools across the globe. Although each Malvern school has its own unique identity, they all share the same DNA and ethos, built around the “Five Centres of Excellence”: British-style Pastoral Care; Enhanced Learning; Entrepreneurial Education; Outdoor and Environmental Education; and a Global Network.

What exactly is the Forest-Beach School?

Malvern College Pre-School Hong Kong is among the first pre-schools in Hong Kong to offer a Forest-Beach School programme, guided by Level 3-certified practitioners. Once every two weeks, the natural world becomes an inspiring extension of the classroom through child-led, sensory learning in woodland and beach environments. The programme engages all five senses and takes place in a range of weather conditions whenever it is safe to do so.

FOREST-BEACH SCHOOL PROGRAMME: Navigating Risk and Uncertainty

At the heart of MCPS’s outdoor learning approach is the Forest-Beach School (FBS) Programme, which takes children beyond the classroom and into natural environments. Through regular outdoor experiences, children have opportunities to explore, take appropriate risks, solve problems and develop confidence through practical experiences.

What Children Love? They can explore natural environments, take on physical challenges and make decisions for themselves while learning outdoors.

Rather than simply learning about the natural world, children use it as a setting for active, hands-on learning and developing skills that can support them well beyond the early years.

What Children Develop Through Forest-Beach School:

    • Risk Awareness: Children encounter manageable challenges and learn to assess situations and make appropriate decisions.
    • Resilience: Physical and practical challenges give children opportunities to persevere, adapt and try different approaches.
    • Problem-Solving: Outdoor experiences encourage children to work things out, respond to changing situations and find practical solutions.
    • Confidence & Independence: Children have opportunities to make choices, navigate unfamiliar situations and develop confidence through hands-on experiences.
  • PROMOTING FINANCIAL LITERACY: More Than Just Money

Financial Literacy is introduced in K1 and K2, with classes taught in both English and Mandarin. Through games, stories, role-play and practical activities, children explore concepts including value, choice and responsibility. The programme also gives them opportunities to apply these ideas outside the classroom, including earning a small amount through helping at home and using it during a class market visit.

The Scoop on Financial Literacy at MCPS:

    • Financial Literacy classes begin in K1 and K2 and are taught in both English and Mandarin.
    • Games, stories, role-play and experiential activities introduce concepts such as value, choice and responsibility.
    • Children can earn a small amount by helping at home, then save and spend it during a class visit to the market.
    • At the market, children practise negotiating and making purchasing decisions, including buying seeds to take back to campus, plant and care for.

MALVERN COLLEGE HONG KONG: Bridging to the Future

MCPS is designed to give children foundations that can support their next stages of education, with a focus on resilience, curiosity and adaptability. These capabilities continue to develop as children move into primary and secondary education, including at sister school Malvern College Hong Kong.

    • At Malvern College Hong Kong, students can build on these foundations through opportunities including TEDx talks, Model United Nations (MUN), and social initiatives with the Round Square committee.

The transition from MCPS to the next stage of education is therefore presented as a continuation of skills developed during the early years, with children encouraged to approach new challenges with curiosity, confidence and independence.

    What Sets it Apart?

    • Leadership: Students at Malvern College Hong Kong can take on leadership opportunities through activities such as TEDx talks and the Round Square committee.
    • Global Issues: Model United Nations (MUN) gives students opportunities to debate and explore international issues.
    • Social Action: The Round Square committee provides a route for students to become involved in social initiatives and community-focused projects.
