Guide To Yogyakarta With Kids

Guide To Family-Friendly Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta is the cultural heart of Indonesia. Located on the island of Java, this colourful city, known affectionately as “Jogja” amongst locals, is a treasure trove of stunning thousand-year-old architectural sites, intricate handicrafts as well as traditional puppetry. There is an underlying current of spirituality, and life moves along here at a much slower pace making it more of an ideal leisurely pitstop for families than frenetic Jakarta.  Here are some of the best things to do with kids in Yogyakarta!

  • Yogyakarta With Kids - Stay - Sheraton

    Family-Friendly Hotels In Yogyakarta:

There is only a small cluster of global hotel chains in Yogyakarta - the Hyatt Regency, MeliaNovotel, Ibis and Sheraton, with the Sheraton and Hyatt being the most family-friendly. Do not discount the local offerings though. We highly recommend the Royal Ambarrukmo, housed within a former royal residence right next to Plaza Ambarrukmo, where you can shop for sundries at French hypermarket Carrefour.

  • Family-Friendly Restaurants In Yogyakarta For Kids:

Kesuma Restaurant is cozy spot and its dishes pack in a lot of flavor. Tucked away in a side street in an old, Javanese-style wooden house, this little gem showcases local delicacies, prepared lovingly by its matronly owner. Their chicken spring rolls are a hit with kids. Other places to try include Sofra Bistro and Purawisata and Gazebo Garden and Restaurant.
  • Family-Friendly Things To Do In Yogyakarta:

The primary highlight of any trip to Yogyakarta is the ancient Buddhist monument of Borobudur, set against the spectacular vista of the Menoreh mountain range. Prambanan, a thousand-year old Hindu temple compound is another majestic sight not to be missed. Make sure to drop by Jalan Malioboro, Yogyakarta's main shopping thoroughfare to pick up some traditional wares and clothing. Your kiddos will love all the happenings too!
