5 Language Learning Help Tips For Parents In Singapore

Helping Kids Learn A Language That You Don't Speak?

Hero

As parents, we know the immense benefits of our children being multilingual.  But, when our kids are learning a language we do not speak – it is hard to help!   If you are looking for ways to support your learner at home but are at a loss on where to start – you are not alone.  Little Steps chats with Singapore American School’s language teachers and parents of multilingual kids to provide top tips for helping and supporting your child in this language learning process at home.

  • Encouragement

Encouragement goes a long way. Always be positive and encouraging of your child/children when they are speaking their other/new language.

  • Tip-2

Avoid language shows. Encourage kids to use both languages/second language, but don’t be too pushy. Avoid the “language show”, forcing them to speak to or in front of other people (especially strangers) can be very uncomfortable and may make them less willing to try.

  • Tip-3

Tech tools. Have kids watch TV or movies or play online games in their second/other language - allow subtitles if it helps them feel more confident or use bilingual flashcards (or Quizlet online) to help them with vocabulary recall.

  • Tip-4

Go back to the basics: Getting them listening to rhymes and catchy songs, and singing along with the lyrics is a fun way to learn.

  • Tip-5

Find a school with a quality language program for your children, preferably a school where they can keep learning the same language as they move from elementary to middle school to high school.
