The early childhood environment at ACG School Jakarta Kindergarten has been specifically designed to spark each students’ curiosity, creativity and natural sense of wonder. Focusing on a play and inquiry-based approach, learning is centered around each student’s interests to encourage engagement and investigation, with circle time and small learning stations the main modes of teaching.
Joining the ACG Kindergarten in 2019, Senior Teacher for Early Learning, Vanessa Ellison is a bona fide expert in the field with over 23 years’ experience in education. She believes early childhood is a vital period in a child’s learning and holistic development and continually creates opportunities for her young students to explore, experiment, solve problems and express themselves as individuals.
Vanessa began her teaching career in her native UK before moving into more academic leadership roles. She then taught kindergarten and pre-kindergarten for six years in Beijing! As an early childhood specialist, Vanessa firmly promotes the importance and advantages of effectual kindergarten programs for our youngest learners.
She places great emphasis on growing children’s conceptual understanding, along with important skills such as communication, innovation, problem-solving and self-management, to equip them with the tools they will need in later life.
Currently, Vanessa jointly oversees ACG School Jakarta’s International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IBPYP), which offers exceptional educational opportunities, as well as providing the communication and socialization skills children need for future learning success!
From the age of 3 years, students at ACG School Jakarta Kindergarten are exposed to:
- International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme – a gentle and age-appropriate introduction to inquiry-based learning.
- Specialized and holistic teaching – which is emphasized in the ACG Primary and Secondary School.
- English is used for daily interactions with daily Bahasa Indonesian lessons integrated into the Kindergarten curriculum.
- Subjects such as swimming, physical education, visual art, and music, are taught alongside core subjects.
Vanessa feels the success of the ACG Kindergarten curriculum lies in the way it incorporates the IBPYP’s inquiry and high-quality play-based learning experiences. By delivering the program through this method, it allows children to be active participants and leaders of their own learning. “Our pedagogy is inspired by Reggio Emilia, where we create an evolving learning environment that empowers students’ curiosity and exploration,” she explains. “Additionally, I work with a team of highly-skilled, experienced, and passionate educators who encourage the students to pursue their individual interests."
In this way, ACG Kindergarten can customize learning based on their student's unique needs and motivations. Vanessa also confirms that the rewards of working with children are many, and especially enjoys building strong relationships with her team, her students, their parents, and caregivers.
