No trip to Colombo, Sri Lanka is complete without a visit to Barefoot to peruse hand-dyed and locally designed clothes, bags, sarongs, pillows and linens, as well as a menagerie of toy animals. And good news for Hongkongers…Barefoot’s products are available from online retailer Pedlar Street!
Barefoot was founded over 40 year ago by artist Barbara Sansoni, who designed cloth for women learning to weave in a convent workshop. To this day, Barefoot works with women weavers in small work centers in the countryside.
Barefoot’s flagship store also includes a café, gallery and bookshop. Set in a lovely frangipani-dappled courtyard, Barefoot Café serves a range of sandwiches and daily specials. Desserts are delicious, particularly the frozen chocolate mousse. The open and relaxed setting allows children plenty of space to run around.
