Mihee Kwon is the mother of two boys at GIIS, Joonhee More (Grade 3, PYP) and Min Jun More (Kindergarten 2). Min Jun is currently on the Global Montessori Plus program in Kindergarten.
"After joining GIIS, I can see Min Jun’s development in many ways. He loves to go to school each day and is very happy to be with his teacher, teacher assistants and his friends. The nursery and kindergarten teacher community are very warm and welcoming to kids, and I believe that’s what they need at this age. I’m impressed that Min Jun interacts with them so enthusiastically and has formed a warm bond with his friends and his kindergarten teachers so quickly."
Min Jun particularly enjoys numbers, art and drawing, she says. "He also likes dress-up days when students dress up as a favourite cartoon character or represent a profession or community worker that they look up to. He usually comes home and shares his day with me excitedly, so I’m happy to hear that from him."
Min Jun attends the Extended Global Montessori Plus Program, which takes place from 9am to 3.30pm. "In the morning, there is language, math, music classes and motor skill development exercises. Activities in the afternoon include dance and storytelling. Min Jun loves dancing and he is happy with the variety of activities in the program," says mom.
She is impressed by the communication between parents and teachers, too. "We get regular weekly updates by email, with photos on what the children did during the week. They are very friendly and update me on any interesting thing that Min Joon did in class."
She says it was very easy for him to adapt to the school. "Within a week of his joining, he was able to settle down and mingle with his classmates and teachers easily."
Mom says Min Jun has become self-confident since joining the Extended Global Montessori Plus Program. "His teacher says that by volunteering for activities even when his peers don’t, they follow his lead. I can see him developing leadership skills as well."
Overall, she has found the Global Montessori program to be very good. "There are lots of interesting activities for the children, the teachers are warm and nurturing, and the fees are affordable. Initially, both my boys were in the local system and it was okay. My husband wanted us to try GIIS and I’m quite happy with our choice now because our boys are excited and even impatient to go into school every morning. It’s like a second home for them."
