We all know that young children these days love having the opportunity to interact with technology. At One World International School (OWIS) Nanyang* and Suntec, teachers use this keen interest to engage primary students further in their learning.

Digital Learning At OWIS
As part of the IB Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) that the international school follows for young learners, students inquire into themes and concepts using a balance of reading materials and digital learning. This exposure to digital resources is done in a mindful, safe and carefully supervised way. In the Primary grades, every class has an assigned bank of shared iPads on which they can work together for group tasks and projects.
ICT As A Timetabled Lesson
OWIS has also introduced Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a timetabled lesson every week. In this lesson, experienced ICT teachers introduce primary learners to digital skills and resources that they can use to make deeper enquiries. This ICT curriculum has been carefully designed to be age-appropriate and create exciting connections with other lessons.
For instance, when exploring the world of stories as part of their Unit of Inquiry, the ICT teachers encouraged Grade 1 learners to create their own stories using the Storyjumper app. Students appreciated the chance to become authors and honed their creative thinking and self-management skills.
Benefits Of Nurturing Digital Skills In Primary Students
Through the mindful use of technology devices and digital learning, students develop their creative thinking, research and collaborative skills, which are crucial to their learning journey at school and beyond. ICT is also a fun and motivating way for students to learn, making it a valuable tool in the modern classrooms at OWIS.
What’s more, educators at OWIS nurture digital citizenship in students, helping them to learn about online safety, digital privacy, and appropriate online behaviour from a young age.
