If you’ve been hearing whispers about pickleball and thinking, “Is that some kind of fancy food trend?”—don’t worry, you’re not alone. Spoiler alert: no, it’s nothing to do with pickles. Pickleball is the new ball game that is a cross between tennis, badminton, and ping pong, and is quickly taking Singapore – and the rest of the world – by storm.
Whether you’re a seasoned racket sport pro or someone who likes the idea of chasing a ball while catching up with friends, this guide will give you the lowdown on everything you need to know – what pickleball is, how to play without tripping over your feet, and the best spots in Singapore to get your game on. Let’s paddle up!
If you’ve ever felt that tennis, badminton and ping pong are too difficult and are reserved for the professionals, here’s a sport that is entry-level for all ages so even kids can join in too!
Pickleball is like the cool cousin of tennis, badminton, and ping pong , since it incorporates elements of all three sports. Played on a smaller court with a paddle and a wiffle-like ball, it’s easy to pick up and perfect for all skill levels. The rules are simple: hit the ball over the net, don’t let it bounce twice on your side, and try not to laugh too hard when you miss an easy shot. It’s a sport that’s social, slightly competitive, and totally worth the hype!
Pickleball is usually played on a court similar in size to a badminton court, with a net, like tennis. It can be played as singles (one-on-one) or doubles (two-on-two). The goal? Score points by hitting the ball over the net and into your opponent’s side of the court without them successfully returning it. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how to play and the rules to follow:
It’s important to also note that additional rules can be implemented if you want to take your game to the next level and have a greater challenge. For instance, for double games, players can start with one player serving from the right-hand side of their court. Additionally, when a point is scored, you can choose to have the server switch sides with their partner, or if the serving side loses the rally, the second player can serve before the opposing team takes over.
More pointers are also to keep the ball low so your opponents can’t attack as quickly, communicate for double games, and practice soft shots so you can surprise your opponents!
While there are official rules to follow for a proper game and there are skills and strategy involved to become a great player, the main thing is to always have fun!
Since pickleball is a relatively new sport, there aren’t a ton of physical retailers with pickleball equipment in Singapore. For beginners, there’s no need to get high-end equipment anyway. Your safest bet will be from online retailers like Shopee and Lazada. However, here are some places that you can still get pickleball equipment in Singapore:
Performance Pickleball is where you’d want to head to for all things pickleball-related. It’s also the only dedicated indoor court in Singapore, so you can have a smashing time no matter rain or shine. There are plenty of chairs so you can bring big parties and groups here for a fun-filled session, and it’s also suitable for corporate events. The court is available for booking from SG$22 an hour, and slots are released 9am daily.
