Online Learning At Hong Kong Academy!

A Community Driven Approach Proving Successful

With the challenging times surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak and schools around Hong Kong shutting for months, the development of successful online learning programs has been a key focus for schools both in Hong Kong and those prepping for similar situations around the world. Hong Kong Academy‘s online program rolled into place on day 1 with great success for parents, teachers, and kids too. Here, we learn what makes a successful online learning program and what Hong Kong Academy has learned and tweaked with their online learning initiatives. Read on!

  • COMMUNITY FOCUSED: The Importance Of Staying Connected

Hong Kong Academy is known for its close-knit community approach and it is no surprise that this is what drives its success when implementing its online learning model. Teachers, staff, students, and parents are all on-board and sharing helpful tips, improvement recommendations, and feedback. This is crucial as home learning initiatives are always evolving and every child learns differently (something which HKA is known to recognize). Some of the popular initiatives to keep the community connected include - small study groups, outdoor playdates, tips, and posts online and participating in community initiatives such as Action for Kindness and the Community Active Challenge. Additionally, the school conducts ongoing feedback surveys which have enabled the teachers to continue to adapt their online learning model and share resources to support community needs. HKA libraries and technology services remain busy. Library books are available through a daily reservation and external collection service, and the tech team is supporting parents, teachers, and students to successfully navigate the extended digital

The secret sauce? HKA has discovered, that the key is to continually evolve based on feedback and manage the learning levels of the kids online.

In Primary School, a full week of assignments, video lessons and resources are posted in advance on the student's class blog. Each assignment contains guidance and tips to help parents review materials with their children and schedule their week in a manner that best suits their child’s learning style and balances other family commitments. For extra support, classroom teachers are online throughout the school day to answer email queries as well as host twice-daily live chats to support parents in real-time. To keep students connected and enhance wellbeing (another key focus at HKA), the teachers host snack time online and the counselor offers ‘chit-chat’ Google meets where students can come together for some friendship time, play games and have fun. In keeping with their commitment to a balanced and joyful education, Tuesdays have been allocated as specialist subject days, encouraging the students to get away from the screens for a full day to be active and creative offline.

Secondary School teachers are delivering live lessons in the virtual classroom according to the usual weekly timetable. Teachers are carefully structuring each lesson to deliver instruction and supplementary resources, as well as ensuring time is allocated to student-led breakout sessions supported with teacher feedback. This approach to cultivating the digital environment provides much-needed structure and continuity of learning, and in response to parent and student feedback, wellbeing is also being actively integrated into each day’s learning. “Booster breaks” are a new initiative that offers students time each day to tune in to how they are feeling and engage in an activity that gives them physical, mental or emotional boosts enabling them to recharge and stay motivated.

  • RE-IMAGINED SCHOOL EVENTS: Getting Creative With The Community!

Hong Kong Academy hosts amazing events throughout the year including sports day, performances, and literacy week. To give some sense of normalcy, the school has not let the cancellation of school stop the joy families find in attending these events. Teachers have taken these events online through their virtual event portal, giving the students the opportunity to share their talents, compete and have fun.

Sports day in secondary school was hosted by their Athletics Director and volunteer sports coaches live-casting the event in real-time. Parents, students, and teachers tuned in remotely and took part in a series of active challenges in lieu of the regular track and field activities. All active challenge submissions earned house points.

The performing arts team has also been online, reviewing and giving feedback on audition videos that students have submitted in preparation for the performing arts festival which will be live cast this week. Primary and secondary school students from Pre-K to G12 are involved and their performances will be enjoyed by 250 other schools across the International Schools Theatre Association network.

HKA's librarians closed out HKA’s participation in this year's Bring me a Book Read-a-thon by hosting a virtual literacy celebration. Following the open ceremony and a live read-aloud, the students were invited to create and submit a celebration of a book in one of five award-winning categories: Book Trailer, Read-Aloud, Book to Movie, Song/Rap or the “Surprise Us” category. Submissions earned house points with additional points earned by posting pictures in book character outfits, creative reader outfits, and book recommendations. The librarians were available online to answer questions as well as taking care of incoming submissions. Student submissions were showcased during the last 15 minutes of the afternoon.
