These days, more and more people are turning to alternative medicine like acupuncture, TCM and reflexology to support their physical and/or mental health journey. Reiki is another prime example due to its safe, gentle non-invasive form of energy-based healing. In this guide you’ll discover what reiki is and what to expect during your reiki session. We’ve also compiled a guide to the best tried and tested reiki practitioners in Hong Kong.
Developed in the early 190ss by Mikao Usui, Reiki is derived from the Japanese word "rei", meaning "universal" and "ki" referring to the essential energy that flows within all living organisms. Essentially, Reiki is an energy healing technique that promotes relaxation and reduces stress and anxiety through gentle touch. Experienced reiki practitioners use their hands to lightly touch your body and deliver energy, in order to improve flow and balance. Reiki is often used as a complement to other medical or therapeutic treatments and is said to support people dealing with cancer and undergoing treatment, chronic pain, infertility, digestive issues, Parkinson's disease, psychological distress, and stress-related illnesses. There is a growing body of evidence that suggests that Reiki therapy is beneficial for relieving pain, anxiety and depression and improving quality of life in certain conditions.

At the start of the session the Reiki practitioner will ask you about any pre-existing conditions and what the goals you aim to achieve are. During the session, which lasts around 60 minutes, you will lie on a massage table fully clothed as the Reiki practitioner gently places their hands on or just above your body in specific energy locations. You might enter a meditative or relaxed state and experience heat, tingling, or pulsing where the Reiki practitioner has placed their hands. Overall, most people leave the session feeling more relaxed and peaceful.
