While your baby proofing skills may be well-honed, if you’re like many parents out there, you may be a bit lost when it comes to reading product labels, understanding ingredients, and knowing what toys are safe for the kiddies.

KIDS BEDROOMS: * Pay attention to labels when choosing and buying furniture, toys and bedding.
* Ask vendors questions before purchasing a product (about quality, provenance, products used, carbon footprint, etc.)
* Place child’s bed strategically: well-ventilated area not close to any power outlets or electronic devices in order to limit the EMF emissions.
HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS: * Learn how to read labels: an easy starting point is knowing that any word that is too difficult to read and/or pronounce is probably toxic.
* Ingredients on product labels are listed from highest quantity in product to lowest, meaning that if there are essential oils listed at the end, the quantity of oils are minimal.
* Remember that there are no government agencies protecting consumers from household or skincare products and that anyone can write “natural” or “organic” on products without it actually being true.
* Non-processed materials usually do the best cleaning job and are extremely cost-efficient (ex. Vinegar and essential oils).
SKINCARE PRODUCTS: * 95% of fragrances are man-made and 1 out of 5 people have an allergic reaction to fragrances. This is the number 1 thing to ban from your personal skincare products.
* Again, learn how to read labels: the longer and harder the word, the more toxic it is. Less is better when it comes to the ingredient list on skincare products.
* Use databases like Skin Deep from the Environmental Working Group to help understand what is in your products and the risks you incur if using them.
