Hong Kong’s comedy scene is kicking off 2026 with a bang as Backstage Comedy presents “MAITRIARCHY”, a brand-new solo show by Hong Kong-based comedian, actor, poet, producer, and philanthropist Maitreyi Karanth. Set to take place on Sunday, 4 January 2026, at the Hong Kong Arts Centre in Wan Chai, this marks Maitreyi’s first major solo theatre production and serves as the launchpad for her upcoming tour in Australia.

Maitreyi began her stand-up career at the age of 44, and in just seven years, she has become a trailblazing voice in Hong Kong’s comedy scene. MAITRIARCHY promises 85 minutes of laughter, hosted by the “hilarious hostess of the mostess,” Vivek Mahbubani. The show kicks off with opening sets from Ryan Hynek and Mohammed Magdi, followed by 55 minutes of fresh, original material from Maitreyi herself.
Her set combines sharp punchlines with heartfelt storytelling, drawing from family road trips, cultural clashes, midlife awakenings, and the challenges of breaking boundaries as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry. And, of course, you can expect plenty of Hong Kong-inspired humor to keep the crowd roaring. Don’t miss this exciting night of comedy!
