Designed for early learners aged 2.5-5 years, it focuses primarily on these five key developmental goals: Language Development and Communication, Personal, Socio-emotional Development, Cognitive and Numeracy Skill Development, Motor skills and Physical Development, and Appreciation of the Arts.
Play is woven into the pedagogy because children learn best through play. Not only does play impact physical, social-emotional, cognitive development but it also has a positive effect on numeracy, literacy and all other aspects of the curriculum. Their kindergarten furniture, facilities and play-areas are customized for young children.
The Montessori-inspired preschool program is offered at Punggol and East Coast campuses, both of which have customised facilities for early learners.
On the kindergarten program at GIIS, students learn through engaging and active play but also receive a solid foundation in reading, writing, communication, math skills and knowledge of the world that prepares them for Primary 1. The curriculum focuses on language and maths, practical life skills, sensory play and cultural studies.
While they are in their own kindergarten block, they get to see older children when they come into school and go back home, during recesses and other play times. This means that when they are older they are not afraid: they know their way around school and are accustomed to their older buddies and find the transition to primary school easier. They also have access to bigger libraries, studios and other facilities that are in place for the whole school from Grades 1-12.
Early education at GIIS involves the whole student: their interests, peer relationships and ability to think independently. Students learn how to make good decisions and how to collaborate with others. When problems arise, they learn conflict resolution.
The staff and administration at GIIS understand the importance of family. They know it's the young students' first experience away from home, and understand how difficult that can be for both the student and their parents. That's why they consider parents as learning partners in their early years program. Healthy, two-way communication keeps families updated and facilitates student learning.
GIIS students also have the opportunity to enrol for the GMP Extended program, which runs from 9am-3.30pm and includes a rotation of structured instruction in music, dance, drama, speech, storytelling, and more.
The speech and drama classes will strengthen your child’s communication skills, boosting their confidence in public speaking, building their self-esteem all the while helping them to prepare for primary school life. Similarly the arts, music and physical activity sessions will help your child to develop their visual perception, memory of things observed, motor skills, physical strength and team-building skills.
